Default A small CPV tip to possibly save you tons of money.

Okay, so here was my huge "d'oh" moment...

I set up a campaign on my CPV network, targeting URLs and not keywords. I think I have everything set up, so I submit it at 10:00 and head to class for the next 5 hours. My AM approves the campaign at 1:30. I come back at 3:30 and find that I've gotten 6,900 views, for a total cost of $34.24 in two hours' time, with 0 conversions. Had it not been for my spending cap, it probably would have been a lot more. How did I do it?

I bid on the URL "www."

Really, though, I figured if I targeted EVERY SINGLE WEBSITE ON THE INTERNET, I was bound to get a conversion somewhere, right? Well, evidently not. (sarcasm)

Lesson learned: Review your URL/keyword list before submitting the campaign, and make sure it pastes correctly from the URL scraper.

Ok - time to share...

When you target keywords or URL's, you need to be "very specific" (aka highly targeted).

DO NOT target:
- single keywords (ex: dog, home, index, order, etc...)
- top level domains (xyzcompany.com, somesite.com, etc....)

DO target:
- long tail keywords (ex: puppy house training, buy ginkgo biloba, etc...)
- page URL's (ex: xyzcompany.com/page1.html, somesite.com/freetrial.php, etc...)

If you found my post helpful, hit the "Thanks" button in the lower right corner.

Regards,

John

Thanks John,

That's what I'm doing: bidding on page URLs. My URL list pasted incorrectly from my scraper, and evidently one of the URLs got separated into pieces, resulting in the accidental targeting of "www."

Sorry, I misunderstood your post about targeting "www". The way I read it, I thought you intentionally included it.

On the upside, this thread will help others.

It would be most helpful if others would share here as well.

I would share more but then again I would be giving away the content that is going into the "CPV offering" that I am working on.

I might give away 1 or 2 good pieces of information in this thread if I had some idea of what people wanted to know in advance.

Roman8389 - I don't intend to hijack your thread, do you mind if people reply here?

Regards,

John

No problem John, that would be fine. This thread was kind of a venting/frustration post anyways. I would appreciate any help you can give, as I am (obviously) new to CPV myself.

New to CPV as well, and I'll take any help I can get. I've been targeting top level domains as well as page URLs. I know laser targeting makes more sense for ROI, but I'm getting no traffic with those, so I figured I'd do top level domains to at least get a better idea of where the traffic is for my advertiser.

TE2, any tips on direct linking versus landing? I've been trying a few different things with zero success so far.

1. Straight up direct linking (easy to test a lot of different offers with a rotator).
2. Popup banner with creative that has the same feel as the website (very time consuming, especially when I want to test multiple offers).
3. Popup banner that resembles the offer page, but optimized for the smaller popup window size (again, time consuming if I want to test multiple offers).

FWIW, I'm pushing high payout offers. Any help getting me my first buck is much appreciated!

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread. If you guys want, I'll kill this post and start a new thread.

No problem Bob. I wish I had answers to your questions, but my total earnings from PPV are $2.50, so I don't really know what I'm doing either.

Other successful PPV users are welcome to reply also.

I am looking at trying PPV also. There is a new course coming out Tuesday specifically on list building by using PPV traffic called "Mass PPV traffic".

I plan on buying it so I will let you know.
