Affiliate program merchants

WTH are some of these merchants looking for in a publisher?

I've been revamping some of my websites this week and adding merchants to my affiliate account and I just cannot understand the thought process for some of them.

I've got sites where the domain name is the keyword phrase, ranks #1 for that phrase, gets good traffic and has a low bounce rate - but my application gets declined by a merchant whose products fit perfectly into the niche. One merchant actually declined my application - while someone else at the company was trying to negotiate to buy the domain name where I wanted to publish their ads!

I also get annoyed with having to explain why they should let me offer their products and services when there are multiple other similar merchants with similar EPC and commission who have automatic approval. I mean - why should I bother?

Now, as soon as I see "no" in the "automatic approval," I move on 95% of the time. I mean - it has to be an awesome EPC and a really good match for one or more of my sites before I'll apply for affiliate status with these merchants.

Rant off, I guess. I'll go back to work now.
