Default Keeping people on your website for longer times

I've read about putting polls, surverys and contests on your website but I wanted to see if anyone else has any good tips for keeping people on a website longer.

Videos, forums, blogs... anything that allows people to interact will increase the time they saty on your site.

You can also build a list in order to keep in touch with your visitors after they leave your site.

Content is king - depending what web site you are running or the purpose of the website, but video, articles etc etc.

Give your viewers a reason to stay and reason to come back.

The longer a user spends on your site, the more likely they will participate in advertisement or opt-in or anything.

Stick to quality fresh content.

Good luck

First of all, you should answer the following question:

Why would you want to keep visitors on your website longer?

If that is an Adsense website, the goal is to get clicks as much as possible and the content shouldn't be so great so that your visitors get bored reading and want to check some ads.

If that is a CPA website, the goal is to convert the visitor to a lead in the shortest possible way.

The only option that comes to my mind is that if you are trying to build an authority site in your niche. And the simple answer is quality content. Content that people in your niche seeks for. Without good content other things will not stick your visitors to your website.

I think definitely content is king, nevertheless you need to know your audience to get them longer in to your website, because not all the audiences response in the same way to every type of media, the tip of the title is extremely good, but again in your title you need to give some benefit of your site example: if you have a weight loss site you may use the hiper know title: "Who else wants to loose weight in 5 easy steps without doing exercise?", but if your site is about loosing weight to get rip for a weight lifters competition it may change to something like :"Who else wants to loose weight in order to get rip with some easy to follow exercise?", the media does not matter a lot (you can deliver all this on video, audio o simple text) the most important thing is to know your prospect

Yes, content is king, but let's not forget the web design. The look & feel is very important too.

Your site must look professional if you want people to stay longer.

If you are talking about cpa then I guess having content can work or not depending on type of offer.

Ok I have been running a website for over a year, for a while I was writing articles on it ever day for a total of 6 months. Basicly I'm running a recipe website, the only thing I want right now is Page Rank, to do this I know that google looks at how long a person spends on a website as well as links and inbound and all that other bull crud we all know, Right now, since I'm not selling things I want people to read more recipes. Spend more time, I feel at this point in my websites life this should be the goal. Am I focusing on the wrong things? www.popcookbook.com is my site if you want to give it a look.

Hi Crowemaster!

I think one thing people underestimate is actual structure of the site. You can have great content and videos and all the other bells and whistles, but unless your site is physically structured to encourage people to continue reading, its practically useless.

Structure means how you place the graphics, sidebars, colors, how the content flows, what you have above, on, and below the fold, etc.

Having too much content is also just as bad as having too little...just something to keep in mind!

Yep but my number one goal is to make money on a site, so there needs to be a good blend of content, structure, graphics, and most importantly a good sales funnel/structure.

Content is greatly important but always remember the ultimate goal!
