Default a dummy dumb question, sorry, its been a bad week

Hi all,
I'm getting very confused with all the terms such as adserver, publisher, advertiser, ad network etc.

What I want to know is, what is the proper name for the type of company that sells banner ads?

I've made some embarrassing blunders lately over this, thinking a company sells ads but end up finding out they only provide tracking data or some other.

What's concerning is I ask; 'I have a load of banner space available on my website I want to sell', and reeally professional people send back an email that says, I'm not sure what you're asking, how can we help you?". They sound dumber than I actually am.

Its been a heck of a week.

So there's my question; I have a website with a load of banner space available we want to sell through some kind of agency, for pete's sake, what is the overall name of these agencies?
Any favorite reccommendations?
In a perfect world I'd be looking for a hip, easy going kind of company, USA located, thats capable of working outside the box. There's nothing dodgy about my company, quite the opposite, we're well funded and are about to be an unforgetable internet presence.

thanks, boy do I need help, cheers BR88

How much traffic do your sites have?

I believe the term you are looking for is media buying agencies, however to become a publisher you need sites with TONS of traffic normally

BuySellAds
AdBrite
AdSense

These are a few options that you have to monetize your site.

Another possibility is the CPA networks. In this case, you wouldn't get paid for impressions or clicks, but for other specific actions, such as sign up, form submits and sales.

I scanned ebay, they might be having 87 million per day. What about getting a little banner ad in front of that lot, nice.
I scanned craigslist, which may be at 38 million/day. I'm hot on their tail so ...
