Have you ever imagined what it will look like, if you could take a picture of a virtual world, such as Internet? Well, a website (Stringxels) is doing exactly that: to create a picture of the whole Internet. You may think, “This is nuts! It is impossible to take a picture of a virtual world! And even if it were possible, the Internet is huge! There is no way to fit the whole Internet in one single picture!” and you are right, it is nuts and is not gonna be easy, but maybe is not impossible... here is how we plan to do it. The idea is not to print the whole content (text, images, links, etc.) of each website in a picture, but to create a big picture in which you can find and link every webpage of the Internet. Since there are millions of websites, each website will only have right to a small space in the picture. If each website of the Internet can be linked by a tiny banner, then it is possible to create a big mosaic of banners linking every Internet website. However, as you should have already noticed, this is still not enough. Every website has tens, hundreds and sometimes thousands of webpages, hence we will need to include hundreds of millions of tiny banners in our Internet's picture. Even if the banners were insanely tiny (one pixel big), a picture with hundreds of millions of one-pixel banners will be so big and the banners so small that it has no sense to do it. We didn't want to stop at this point, so we tried to find an answer to the next question: What do you do if a digital picture is too large and you want to see part of it in detail? Of-course... you zoom! Then, another problem raised: how can one zoom in that virtual world? And we found the right answer: keywords! Keywords are the perfect way to zoom in and zoom out of the Internet's picture. For each different keyword you will be zooming in a different side of the vast virtual world called Internet. It is completely free. You can invite your friends and you will be able to post banners in your friends' wall too. Look at this as a nice way to share links with your friends and at the same time help us to develop this cool idea. The link is in my signature. Every feedback is welcome. Leo |

Hey guys, Well, after some months of work things are getting better. As explained in the first post, the idea is to make a picture of the whole internet. It is completely FREE. You can invite your friends, you can post banners in your own wall or in your friends wall. For example, if you want them to see the last video of your favourite artist you can post a banner linking the youtube video. Everything you post will keep in the wall until the owner delete it, so you can find your links months later if you don't erase it. Please share with your friends, so together we can build a cool Internet's picture. ![]() We plan to release a poster when we reach an important number of banners. ![]() Every feedback is welcome. So, the question is: Why would a person use that? Will it be like a search engine? If so, populating it manually will not be feasible, you will have to use some sort of spider to crawl and index all the internet. Not a totally bad idea but I think, you need to improve it and offer something unique so that people would like to visit it. And the search form needs to be improved I guess. When I type "baby", only "baby dance" shows up, the other baby banner doesn't show up. |

Yes, that's a good question. I believe that trying to compete with Google is not a smart idea, so the answer is no, it should not be only a search engine. I don't really pretend to have the whole Internet in my database, but with a good number of users I think I can have the "coolest" part of Internet in my database: the webpages that people like and want to share with friends. ![]() I think it is a good way to share links between friends. If you want to re-visit a link that a friend of yours posted in Facebook a month ago, you are gonna have a hard time find it, because Facebook focus in friends and groups, not links. LikedIn in professional contacts, mySpace in music, etc. Stringxels pretends to be the site to share links in a new way, and by doing so create a picture of the Internet. And I really would like to see how it looks the picture with thousands of links, could that be a guinness record? ![]() Concerning the search form, the result is correct, since the other banner doesn't have "baby" in the keywords, only in the description. Maybe I should check also the description... I will take a look at it. Thanks for the feedback! Leo |
