Ok this is the story: I'm a long time visitor of a famous website, and recently, I noticed that there are some ads on that site start to create sound, and they are pretty annoying when I read the content of the site. Anyway, I contact the person who is in charge of the advertising of that site and he said that there are some companies bought their inventory and they start to place ads with sound and it annoyed the readers alot, so he is trying to stop those ads Then we have a little nice chat. He told me that the average CTR of those ads are around 0.05%, I was like WTF, then I search around the site and find something interesting: NONE of the ads are relevant to the content of the site. I asked him what is the highest CTR: he said there was one ad which perform at 12% CTR, and it's about something relevant to the content of the site Now, from this I learn 2 important things: 1- Pouring in money doesn't make big difference if the people who do it are dumb **** 2- Relevancy can make a BIG ASS difference if we know the target audience I did a little research around that site. Both Quantcast and Alexa report the normal visitors are from 18-25 groups with some college. Female percentage is a little bit higher. Most of the visitors earn less than 60k/year and on that site, I see some ads like cold/flu drugs, real estate, vacation, car insurance, health insurance and some service for business Now tell me how many people from 18 to 25 actually need those? I guess less than 1% Then I asked him what is the minimum price for an ad, he said it's $500. I was like holy crap, those idiots spend $500 or more for 0.05 CTR, and those are big companies. On FB advertising, anything lower than 0.08% are trash, I will delete that ad if they can't reach higher than that. So, next time if one of your FB campaigns CTR is around 0.05% and you lose some money, stop that one immediately and rest assure that you are smarter than come big planners of a certain big company who know no **** about capturing customer attention. |

It's sad to say but I've personally seen people in this industry that simply don't care that they're spending that kind of money on low ROI.

Chris is right. When you are in business, you are taught by the "top level" ad specialists that you need to keep your ad running constantly to see success. They never tell you to "split-test" and in fact, recommend against it. They tell you the only way to get results is to keep running the same ad over and over so people can see it. I guess some people's ads work, and some don't. But by blindly throwing up an ad and running it, if it doesn't work, you are burning money. I've done it myself a time or two. It's the misinformation that keeps companies doing what they continue to do, and believing they have to go through a **** ton of money before they see back their investment. |

I would too if they are some random guys who just start advertising, but well, not my problem, right now I'm striking a deal with the guy there, let's see how it work, the traffic amout there is insane, and the reader actually stay a long time on the site to read the content, I'm also their long time reader so I know how to make banners that blend with the site theme.

Actually you don't want it,why? Starting from low budget teach you how to spend money wisely which many so-call business experts never tell you. They all give people the idea that in order to start a business they have to go to a bank, get a huge loan and hopefully turn those into profit before getting broke

1. You need to have money to make money ( I'm not talking 5 or 10 thousand either, I'm talking $100,000 or MORE ) 2. Anyone who's gotten rich on the Internet is just smarter than everyone else and on the level of a doctor or lawyer ( way farthest from the truth ) 3. To have a successful business you need to a) get a big loan from a bank b) lose money for 1-5 years before you can become profitable | |
