Default Risky Business? How much to test CPA?

I got a report from Gauher Chaudry a few days ago which is still on my mind...

He says something like this - asking what the modus operandi was for big-time CPA advertisers using PPV - it came out that they would LOSE $5K in the morning...running several ads and offers...pick out the one that was doing the best, ramp it up then make 15K in the afternoon!

Now what is bothering me is, I am not in that league, and I have been losing hundreds (not thousands) on PPV, mobile, ppc, you name it - without finding the right hit that can actually be a winner.

This makes me think I will never succeed at the game, because I can't risk it.

I'm going to have to look for another model - I know testing/tracking/tweaking is necessary, but this is getting to be so competitive and it seems the people who are "killing it" are out there with big bucks and big balls, so I am not cut out for it.

Whaddya think, anyone making money in CPA without playing hardball?

Sure. All the big dogs are doing is testing faster and seeing results faster. You can certainly compete, you just need to start smaller.

One thing I tell people all the time is that CPA is a process. Most people who get into CPA and try to play with the big dogs right away get burned. They shell out thousands of bucks into some paid traffic campaigns, lose their shrit, and walk away.

In my opinion, everybody should be starting small. I always suggest starting with free traffic. Then migrate to paid traffic when you learn enough to test smart. Start in less competitive niches and terms and then work yoru way up. You DONT need to hit a grandslam your first time at bat, and those who do normally walk straight back to the dugout empty handed.

Ask all the big dogs and I can guarantee almost every single one didnt start by shelling out big bucks. Most started by doing SEO, or article, video, niche blogs, whatever. They didnt walk on the scene and throw down 10k one morning.

So, are you cut out for CPA because you dont have thousands to throw around...absolutely. Just play smart, start small, and work your way up.

I'm making what I would call decent money with CPA (can't support my entire family, but with a husband who works full-time, I make enough to get us by and get a few "extras"). I'm definitely not "playing hardball," as virtually all of my traffic is from free sources, so it can be done -- just maybe not the way you're trying to do it.

Hang in there and experiment with a couple other traffic methods and see if you can find something that works for you!

Do OFFLINE. Everyone wants to make it online, so therefore the competition is stiff there. You have so much competition ( with anything the converts ), it's very hard to compete.

Do you think you'll have any competition offline in your area? If you're unlucky, you might have to compete with 1 or 2 other people. How much do you think that will increase your chances of success?

Huge opportunities in the offline and online/offline hybrid world.

Some offline channels include

newspaper/periodical
radio
tv
flyer
billboard
kiosk
postcard

and there are many more offline techniques that aren't cpa related but have tremendous opportunity and you can still reap the same sorts of benefits (residual/passive income etc)

seo clients
web dev
directories

one of the most underrated sources in my opinion!
