Default Bad CPA Publicity on UK Television

Rip Off Britain

BBC iPlayer - Rip Off Britain: Series 2: Episode 9

Today there were two reports about (what I believe are) CPA programmes - one for Acai Berries and the other for Tooth Whitening.

Classic products.

In both instances the customers found it near impossible to stop the company charging them monthly despite trying to cancel.

In the Acai case the lady could never get through to the helpdesk to cancel her order and was not able to cancel the payments because they are under the control of the product manufacturer.

She had to close her bank account to stop them.

Will be interesting to see what looms in the UK with regards the law on free trials into continuity plans if more are reported.

In one sense I'm concerned how it might make my life harder ... then you remind yourself that these people are your mum, your dad, your brother and sister ...

It's just a case of the minority ruining it for the majority.

I free trial done well and honestly is probably one of the best offers there is and provided you're upfront and honor the cancellation requests, then there's nothing wrong with them.

I actually thought this was already being clamped down on... by the FTC, Google etc. Perhaps that was more for the US?

The FTC is American and is for Americans. I doesn't affect stuff in Britain in any way, as far as I'm aware. I'm sure they have long tentacles but they are not set up to govern Brits.
