Tomorrow I will be buying a domain for seo promotion purposes. The original plan was to have a general domain like free"offername".com, net, or org well those where taken. So junk that idea. While checking the keyword list there where two three word search terms one with 15,00 and the other 3,000 global monthly searches. Each fit quite well together and only adds one extra word to the domain. Question: Would having more characters (17) in the domain cause negative side effects? Even though there would be 2 exact matches for the key word phrases I already planned to use anyway? Reason for asking: Have been told long domains = bad idea. Thanks warrior forum your rock! Edit: More Q's. Would having a .us domain rank better with a domain containing the letters usa? Does the domain extension help with seo besides having popular .com,net,and org? Just trying to make sure all research is done properly. Thanks again. |

If your goal is to have people remember and easily type it in, and be able to advertise it in print media or tv/radio, you need as short a domain as possible. If your goal is to rely on search engine traffic, length makes NO difference, as long as the keywords are properly chosen. |

I think a .us domain looks good if you marry it with a clever word before that, i.e. 'toysr.us" or "delici.us" etc. otherwise it won't really matter

Gene is right if you are looking at a name from an SEO point of view then the length makes no difference, in fact it could a long name could be of advantage if it allows you to use all your target keywords. Short names have there place such as “Twitter” but before twitter came along I doubt many people searched on the keyword! Ditto for youtube. Short memorable names are great if you have an idea that will rapidly generate large amounts of traffic. |
