google adwords basic question

Hello,

I signed up for Google Adwords.

There are all of these green dots next to the keywords. Then there are checkboxes to the left of the green dots, which are typically all unchecked.

If I check-box all of them, the check marks go away if I go to a different Adwords screen and back.

Are those boxes supposed to be checked? I don't know what the checkboxes are there for.

I'm guessing the green circles mean "green light..your ad is running!". And maybe you use the checkboxes if you want to do something like turn off a particular keyword, or edit it.

But I'm not sure. Any ideas on this?
