Default What is considered a decent conversion rate for an opt-in form on a website.

I have put up a blog for the self help niche with opt in forms and a free report page. have been submitting articles to article directories of PR 4 or better for the past 2.5 months. I am finally seeing some traffic to my site and since I installed the Stat Press plugin to track unique visitors among other things to my website, I have had just over 300 unique visitors. People are also just starting to opt in to my autoresponder series.

Sorry for being long winded and rambling, but the main thing I need to know, so I can decide whether or not I need to change the website, opt-in form or something else is this

"I've got 300 unique visitors to the site, and only 3 optins in all! Is a 1% conversion rate good, bad, average???? Do I need to start thinking about split testing the Free Report page or do I need a large quantity of unique visitors before worrying about that?"

It's hard to give an average number, because it varies depending on the site, niche, gift that you're offering, etc... However, yes, 1% is very low.

I don't know exactly how you're exposing people to the gift, but try to use an AJAX pop-up. Display it just once when people visit your site. Then, have the opt-in box also on the sidebar. This way everybody will notice your gift and the ones who prefer to see the content before signing up will have the chance to do it later.

Also, split-test gifts and ask only for the email (not the name) too see if you get better results.
