I have not read every post on this thread, but I find that being proactive in the application process seams to make things run more smoothly and gets you accepted much quicker sometimes. If you find an offer on OfferVault that you want to run and have traffic for that niche, I usually call up the AM before I even apply. If the AM you are speaking with is going to be helping you out or assigned to you, it is good to find out how much they know about running your verticals and also to see if your personalities "click here" <-(pun intended). Some AMs just manage affiliates and some AMs are affiliates or were and can help you out much more if need be. My 2 cents!

I have a question about traffic: Do you think it will sound completely naive to a CPA network (or is it naive) if I plan on generating traffic by backlinking on relevant forums and blogs, along with article marketing?

I am new and don't have money to spend/lose on PPC right now

(And I would like to have a sense of what I am doing before pursuing this source of traffic).

I might also mention/pursue social networks and social bookmarking, if that sounds allright? Will heed your advice and focus on one or two methods first... just wondering if the first two methods might turn networks off. I am a newbie and I do want to be honest - but I also don't want to shoot myself in the foot before I even get going

I found your sixfiguremission site (with the cpa traffic source info) and that was very helpful too!
