Advice is hard to give and receive in this market from my experience

I can tell you that a big budget is must for testing. Even more than PPC at least for me and from my experience. I am by no MEANS an expert in media buys, but I do turn profits with this source.

I found for me a basic eBook did the job as far as where to start, but all my learning came from my budget and test test testing.

Good Luck,

CHAD

I do media buys for my offline business, and I can conclude that you have to know first who your target market is and who you advertising's audience is. If they match or related then go for it.

The problem appears when you invest to media buys but no return of your investment.

mediatraffic does well with urls. Find the urls that relate to your product and market on them.

IAMX - I would be happy to provide you with some information on the world of media buys....We discussed this inside of COPEAC U a few months back...Here is a snip-it from that article....Feel free to email me if you would like more details or access to the complete article...

To touch on what others have said, prepare to lose some money testing...If you're going to be using RON (run of network) targeting initially, that money will probably be lost but the data you will receive will be very valuable. You'll get data on which sites seem to be working best, which hours of the day yield the most traffic, the best traffic, and so on...Media Buying is a fickle beast to tame but it tamed, it can be very fruitful for you.

Stephen@Imminteractive.com is my email if you'd like to discuss in detail.

Example Taken from Inside COPEAC U:

  • Ad-networks will require a minimum deposit for testing purposes. This budget will vary depending on the network but most ad-networks will require a $500 - $1,000 budget.
  • Do not waste all of your money on the test budget. The ad-network will most likely ask you what your daily budget will be after you go through your test budget. If all of your funds were spent testing, you have nothing to invest back into the campaign if you see potential in a campaign. Additionally, you may burn a bridge with that ad-network.
  • During the testing phase, request “run of network” traffic. Your ad will be displayed randomly throughout the ad-networks inventory. During this phase you’re spending money to gather data; you’re not looking to make a profit. Hence, the importance of having funds to invest once the testing phase is complete.
  • The test should be at least 24 hours. This allows you to receive a full days worth of data to evaluate. You can identify certain times of the day that spike in traffic. This allows you to “day part” your media buy; Turning the buy on and off at certain times throughout the day.
  • Based on your daily spend and goals you want to achieve in terms of ROI, you need to calculate what metrics you need to obtain to hit those goals. CPC or CPM depending on the buy, CTR from ad to splash page (if one is being used), CTR from splash page to offers, conversion rate(s) / EPC’s (if you’re displaying more than offer to the consumer).
  • Create several AD’s even if you have one that is currently performing well and leading to a high ROI. Consumers become numb to advertisements they see on a consistent basis. If your AD gets stale, have a backup ready to swap out rather than wasting time gather images and coming up with new ad-copy.
  • NEVER waste traffic. If you have 4 AD’s for the same campaign and all result in positive ROI, don’t continue running all 4. Determine which AD’s yield the highest ROI, select the top 2 and scale those. Focus on what makes you most amount of money.

That is PPV not media buys...

Do NOT buy an ebook. I know a lot of successful media buyers and none of them would/have bothered selling an ebook selling their secrets.

The only ones who would make an eBook on media buying or those who aren't successful with it and are regurgitating facts they have heard before. You can read about all the basics or decent blogs (free).

If you are not successful with PPC or PPV do not move on to media buying. It's a very harsh traffic source and will blow your budget before you say stop.

Think of it as a upgrade from PPC or PPV. Crawl before you walk.

Save your time and money. Get PPC or PPV to work first.

You don't have to know PPC or CPV first to be successful with media buys. A media buy can be you buying a banner spot on a blog. That's a media buy and it can cost very little per month yet yield some profit. Multiply that by 10 blogs and 10 buys then you could be making decent money. People's definitions of media buys does differ quite a bit.

It's not always all about ad servers and $5,000+ per day minimums. Start small, do some little tests and reinvest back into your buys so eventually you're doing larger ones if you're good at it.

Agree with the Coach on that one. Doing a media buy doesn't have to be rocket science, and your budget doesn't have to be $1,000,000 either. You could buy media anywhere from $100 to (hundreds of thousands) per month, depending on what you're going after.

I've done alot of research when it comes to media buys and I never intended to go threw the networks to make large buys (1000-2000 a month). I was going to contact the blog owners and cut out the middle man. I guess I should had explained that better.

It totally depends what you promoting, and your budget.

However from my experience testing new campaigns directly on small on blogs is like taking the stairs instead of the escalator. It's a long slow process. With minimal benefits. You're going to get old before you get rich.

Sites like Sitescout.com are great when you are starting with media buys. It lets you bid CPC on HUGE sites. This means you spend as little as $5-$10/day. However if you get it profitable you can go direct, knowing you have the possibility to spend $xxx, xxx+, without having to fiddle round with a bunch of small sites and webmaster who are slow to respond.

I used to search the web for little mom and pop blogs or web spaces on free hosted sites (many of these people are just average people, not marketers and don't know the monetization potential of their sites) and do small media buys with these people.

It's a lot of work finding good ones, but you can find really awesome gems out there. Give some of these people $20 to put your banner on their site and they are happy...and they don't even know you are making 100 times that!!! There were some political blogs I found that got insane traffic and weren't being monetized at all!

Digital point is also a good place to find webmasters who are willing to let put banners on their site for next to nothing, but like Kenster said your really need to weed out the bad ones and find the gems.

Media buys is great, but it's also one of the most expensive models. If you want to give it a go I recommend you to have a few hundred dollars for testing.

Also, consider starting with small direct to site media buys, that would be a nice way to get started with cheaper rates and more flexible rules. Google AdPlanner can help you find placements.

If you decide to use a media buying network, then, as Steve suggested, test with run of network traffic, which is cheaper.

Run small tests, don't spend all of your money on just one campaign and track everything to spot good combinations between banners and placements.

You don't necessarily need big budget to promote your CPA offers with Media Buying .

You can start small and grow slowly depending on your performance on small media buys
