Default General Domain Name vs Keyword Rich Domain name

Hi guys,

I am deciding whether to buy a general domain name and build different product reviews within the website OR to buy a keyword rich niche specific domain name and promote only products from a single niche.

Two concerns with the general domain name:

(1) Will a visitor be overwhelmed by the different categories within the website and lose sight of what they really wanted to buy in the first place?

(2) My general domain name will not be keyword rich. Does this matter? Will it affect my website Google rankings in any way even though the individual page names will be keyword rich?

Concern with the keyword rich niche specific domain name:

(1) If I were to build ten niche sites, I would need 10 domain names, which means this option will be more costly than the first one.

What do you guys think? Which one should I go for?

It'll be great if someone with experience could share.

Thanks so much.

Personally I prefer the second option. Of course I have been accused of having a narrow focus and no ability to multitask. Sites with multiple products that are unrelated are difficult for me to optimize, maybe others have better success. I prefer to pick a niche for each niche product/service. The cost of buying a domain is so little, I never let that influence me. that being said, the cost in time to create, optimize, and promote 10 sites is huge. Not knowing your experience level, you always have the option to build one site at a time until the workload gets to point where you need to stop and maintain what you have. Once you find a working model, you can start looking at outsourcing some work, but that's another topic altogether.

Thanks Nicoledeal! It is probably a good idea to go with the second option as that is what I usually do.

Does anyone else have any other thoughts?

I don't think it really matters as far as PPC is concerned. You will link to the "keyword specific" page anyway, and it will still be 100% relevant to your offer.

If you are speaking of SEO, then #1 ( the authority site ) may or may not do better in the SERPS, it just depends.

That's my .02 cents.

You're right, it depends on a number of things. Looks like I will stick to a keyword rich domain for now. Thanks for the input.
