Hey guys,

I am just getting back into CPA marketing and wanted to start a thread which I will try to update daily on my progress. Here is a bit of background on me.

I was a full-time internet marketer for about 3 years and then was hit with the panda update. That really screwed me over. I tampered with CPA marketing (mainly on POF), almost got it to work then ran out of funds. So I had to get a job.

I have decided to get back into CPA marketing using Facebook ads. I am DETERMINED to make this work. My budget will be $20/day. Everything I earn will go back into buying traffic.

Here is my mindset going into learning Facebook ads + CPA marketing

1. Expect to lose money - I do not expect to make even a single conversion until after $100 worth of testing
2. Stick with few offers - I will only stick with a few offers and continue to test, test, test
3. Bid high, collect data fast - Since I only have a couple hours to work on this a day, I will be bidding high to get quick traffic to collect data.
4. Increase CTR first, then conversions - I will be doing my best to learn how to increase the CTR for my target audience, first then conversions. This means I will be direct linking, then building a landing page to increase CR.
5. DO NOT GIVE UP - Failure is not an option.

Day 1
- Did some research and got approved for one offer which I am very familiar with.
- Set up one campaign w/ 12 different ads. Ad copy is the same across the board. Only variation is the pictures.
- Spent about 30 minutes on targeting.
- Bid on CPM model (CPC was not getting traffic fast enough)
- Cut ads that did not have clicks after 5k views.
- Top performing ad had 0.011% CTR

STATS FOR DAY 1

Campaign Reach: 61,267
Frequency: 6.4
Clicks: 31
Click-Through Rate: 0.008%
Total Spent: $19.24
Conversions: 0

Day 2

- Looked at the data from day 1. Found a trend
- Changed targeting to match trend to test if things would change
- Threw up 15 new ads with same ad copy, but different types of pictures to match that of on going trend from day 1
- Bidding on CPC to test if I get traffic (very high CPC and traffic not coming in. Will be testing CPM for day 3 with same top ads)
- ONE CONVERSION & top performing ad was 0.111%!

STATS FOR DAY 2

Campaign Reach: 27,978
Frequency:3.8
Clicks: 20
Click-Through Rate: 0.081%
Total Spent: $9.75
Conversions: (EDITED) 2!!!!!

Takeaways from Day 2

Changing my targeting increased my CTR a TON. Bidding way above the suggested CPC still does not get my ad delivered, so I will try to use the CPM model to see if my ads will get delivered more.

I am scared that will deplete my budget really fast because the new targeting CPM is very expensive compared to Day 1. Also, I want to try running the ads at different times of the day. I will test that for Day 3 and Day 4 given that my ads get delivered.

From the current trends of Day 2 (I know its a small amount of testing), I seem to have found a current trend for the image that appeals to my audience. I will look for those tomorrow to test on Day 3 & Day 4.

    Mid day 3 update:

Changed to CPM from CPC: top performing ad so far has 3.6k views, CTR 0.05% & spent $0.47. A LOT cheaper than CPC. I will be split testing this image with different borders and ad copies to see what works best.

No conversions today yet! I am expecting conversions to come around after 3pm PST.

DAY 3 Update (a bit late)

Ran about 7$ worth of traffic before finding out that my offer was PAUSED! That was a bummer, but it won't STOP ME.

I found a similar offer that I can send to the same targeting, changed the headline and ad copy and went from there. Sadly, the new offer is paused on Wednesdays so I will be collecting data today.

Using CPM as it seems cheaper now. I was getting about 10 cent clicks before finding out that my offer was paused.

    Day 4

    Campaign Reach: 30,580
    Frequency:12.5
    Clicks: 64
    Click-Through Rate: 0.017%
    Total Spent: $23.82
    Conversions: 1

    Takeaways
Spent today testing a bunch of ads for the new campaign. I think the adcopy needs a ton of work. Found a few images that have decent CTR and cut the rest that had less that 0.02% CTR when viewed 10k.

Top performing ad, I tested it with different borders. Seems like we have 1 clear winner for CTR, but another one yielded 1 conversion. Will need to test more.

My targeting seems to be very slow in the morning, so I might want to pause my campaigns until later in the afternoon. Again, too early to tell and will need more testing.

Tomorrow, I will be split testing the winning image with different headlines & adcopies. I will get back to you with the results.

    MID Day 4 Update

Didn't start my campaigns until later during the day to test which times will yield greatest CTR. Changing up the variations of the ads did WONDERS for my CTR. I am getting 0.076% after 16k views. This is a HUGE improvement from day 1 where i was getting an average of 0.01%.

Got 55 clicks, spent 13.31 and got 5 conversions!!! Just a few dollars til I break even! (payout is 2.25/lead)

I won't be updating until tomorrow as I will get major shitfaced.

Are you sending visitors to a landing page or directly to the offer?

Your going about this 100% correct. Your tracking and making intelligent decisions based on your gathered data. If you keep this up you will eventually find some constants and make some profit.

My suggestion is if possible try to do something that could pay out recurring income and put that in the mix. It might not convert as well but having a residual income is nice. Even if you only invest $20 a week to that offer and let it build up if you keep at it your monthly check will be more than your investment.

Thanks guys! I am still learning. Now that I know how to have good CTR, I need to work on my conversion rate. My conversion rate is pretty low..5% w/ payout around 2 bucks.

I tested something today and learned that for this offer, day parting is important. Made almost 0 conversions the first half of the day, then in the evening the offer was converting well.

I will probably need to change my bidding model to CPM to take advantage of my high CTR%. This way, I can profit even with a small payout.

I will be doing up another offer with around 5 dollars a conversion. This one will be a little more difficult, but I will keep you posted!

Stats at the end of the day:

    Campaign Reach: 3,301
    Clicks: 314
    Click-Through Rate: 9.432%
    Total Spent: $45.81
    Conversions: 16

    Takeaways from today:
Ads convert better in the evening. Change to CPM model to see if I can profit (CPM bidding doesn't seem to get me traffic sometimes). Create landing page to increase CR. 5% CR is decent, but if I want to profit from this campaign, I will need to create a killer lander. My CR goal is 20%.

EDIT: Pretty lame, offer was paused again today. Will update later

    UPDATE!

Ran the other offer on a different network. Here are the stats:

Need to increase CTR from my landing page to the offer page. Not losing as much money as before, which is good!! Need to change up my targeting to see if that will increase CR too after tweaking the landing page to increase CTR.

    Will update on Monday!

That's pretty good. Capturing those leads while making some conversions. That means the cost of building your list doesn't cost too much. Those click thru rates are pretty impressive. May I ask what type of facebook ad you're using? Is it the right column ad or feed ad that gaves you the best click-thru-rate.

I am actually not capturing any leads. Still new to CPA marketing so I am sticking with the raw basics. I am just sending traffic to my lander then to the offer page.

I can tell you that I am only targeting the US right now. I will be expanding to different countries (and age groups) once I make at least 10$/day on this! What do you think is AMAZING CR? 60%+? Maybe I should aim for that hm...

I am not using any tracking atm. I have prosper set up, but I am only running 1 ad, so I can see all the stats on the backend in terms of network.

Hm..i am not sure the correct process of "learning" from the data, but what I do is I start off tweaking the ad until I get the desired CTR. Then if there is conversions, I set up a landing page. Send traffic there and tweak whatever I need to optimize to get positive ROI.

For example my campaign, I am getting good CTR on my ad & decent CR. To increase income, I know I need to increase CTR from my landing page to the offer page, so I need to split test and optimize my landing page.

After that, I would try to optimize CR.

    UPDATE!

So these stats are for 2 days. Not too happy overall with this as I do not know how to optimize. I know I should increase CTR from my website to my offer page for better CR, but I have no idea how to tweak my website as it is pretty advanced.

I ran another landing page against it and found that it was performing worse than this one, so I cut that. The payout for these campaigns are extremely low, so I feel as if it would be hard to made huge ROI.

Made 100 dollars in revenue today, which was nice, but lost overall. I will keep trucking along even though I feel a bit disappointed since I lost 34 dollars. There are a few other things that I can do if I didn't tweak the landing page like tweaking the targeting and demographic.

I will report back after Tuesday as my server is down for maintenance on Monday.

You should setup tracking if you haven't yet.

Even if it is just Sub-ID so you can remove your non-converting URLs.

My tracking202 is not set up properly. It tracks the links but doesn't track conversions...this is frustrating as I am creating SUBID's for each link and pointing them to a different lander each time.
