10,000 pageviews and $16 from AdSense in the last 30 days - Normal?

When I launched this website two years ago I was naive and had expected traffic to increase much faster than it actually has. I expected social sharing to be more effective too. I have been humbled.

With few back links and no promotion the website is now, after two years of gradual growth getting up to about 200 users a day, 85% of which is Google organic traffic. The site is ranked ~600,000 on Alexa. 15% of traffic is from USA, another 15% from India, 5% from the UK and the rest is from all over the world. Revenue has been ~$15 per month for the last 6 months.

It's a CSS generator tool, so users spend most time using the tool's interface on the second page.

I split the site from one to two main pages on June 22, hence the sudden increase in pageviews and decrease in bounce rate. Originally the tool was on the home page.

These AdSense stats are typical of the last few months.

There are two AdSense ads on the home page, one above the fold and one below. And there is a third Adsense ad below the fold on the tool page.

I'm posting here for feedback on the Analytics and Adsense stats, as I have no idea whether they are normal or not. Is there anything unusual about them that might indicate I've encountered a pitfall? How to go forward?

One concern / frustration is the majority of Adsense clicks generate tiny amounts, like 1, 5 or 10 cents.

Any feedback or suggestions appreciated. Please let me know if you need more info. Thank you for reading.

adsense is a waste of time if you not in the right niche and get the right traffic, after accumulating about $187.00 with adsense google shut my account needless to say they never paid me, so I decided to move on to better things and more money with clickbank a reliable source.....

I see a few CSS generator sites advertising with Carbon Ads & all the ads are targeting front end web/devs.

A lot of times Adsense doesn't show ads that are relvant to the content which obviously will have a low CTR.

I have been to that situation of low EPC from adsense. Try to have some content on your site and move users to those pages. Content based site generally give high EPC than user based site.

Don't rely on single site for your income. Diversify your portfolio and traffic. Keep on testing new niches and get details of traffic and revenue. For example, one of my site on car insurance gave high traffic but low EPC and my another site based on attorney gave low traffic but high EPC.

Slowly build portfolio of sites with low traffic and high EPC. Then buy new domains and launch new sites based on your data collected.

So you got something like 0,5% of ad clicks from your users. I'm no expert on this, but sounds fairly normal to me. Of course it could be higher.

I think trying to find a related product with an affiliate program would be a good idea. Software can have very good affiliate payments because there's no product to ship. Getting just one sale per month would trump Adsense, and it's not like you'd lose a lot by experimenting.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

I actually think it's low. Granted it's been a year since I've used AdSense but these numbers seem really low to me. But it might be typical for your niche. It seems that basically people are not clicking on the ads. Maybe you should try different ad placements or designs.

I'm not an Adsense expert but this seems very low. Have you tried other ways to make money such as cpa offers?

Depends on many factors but yes, it is normal to have this kind of rate from adsense, I would highly suggest to try your own affiliate offers..

Okay, I've noted down ClickBank as something to try. Thanks. I'd be interested to see how it compares - like-for-like ad placement.

This is certainly something to aim for. If honest, I may have to raise the bar a bit to get on the invite-only list. Thank you for the suggestion.

A problem is users (the ones who are engaged) typically spend 3-5 minutes at the top of a single page - the page with the tool on. There are definitely improvements to be made in encouraging users to click through to other pages. So yes, agree more content, spread out across more pages would help things along.

Points noted on diversified portfolio too. Thanks. If nothing else, this site is part of the learning curve.

I have just added an affiliate ad - a related service, which pays $40 per conversion. No idea yet what the conversation rate will be. Like you say though, one conversion per month would make it favourable.

It could be typical for the niche, also low paying regions could be part of it. The audience seems to be small business owners and blog authors, many of whom are located in India and Southeast Asia.

Last 3 weeks - since restructuring

Last year I had only one ad, which was below the fold. I moved it up and saw a 4-fold increase in revenue. I've since experimented with various layouts. I'm currently waiting for more data on the current configuration before changing things again. I'd guess it's far from optimal.

      Ad configuration on home page

      Ad configuration on tool page

This seems to be the consensus advice.

Have now signed up with two affiliate programmes. One implemented (as mentioned above), the other in the pipeline.

      Thank you to everyone.

Nice My friend. You have to target at 75.000 users and around 150.000 - 180.000 pagesviews

you will have around 40 euros profit/day!

Forget about adsense and it's lower payouts, if you can afford to go without payment, then just go with cpa/affiliate offer promotion..

Earning good income from adsense you need to create high quality content. And here is not end.. You also need good amount of targeted traffic from search engines.
When i started my blogging life i tried adsense most of my blog sites. I was not earning more from adsense. I got about 1500 page views daily but only 15-17 add clink. And my cpc was too low- average 24 cents.

But after some month i increased my adsense revenue about 25%.
I think keep experiment on it. It will give you good result soon!

I suggest adding new revenue sources to your site. If the users are using your tool, they are unlikely to click on Adsense ads.

Try promoting some relevant products from Amazon or elsewhere on your site next to the tool. Surely there must be products that people using your tool would also be interested in buying.

You should switch over to CPA networks where it offers greater profit compared to AdSense. If you can see my attachment the AdSense is in the bottom from all profitable entities.

If you ever considering to joining CPA network. You can join Blackfox Performance Network, that is not an referral link so just head to the signup page.

A good ctr is a click to 10 views or at least that rate i had the time i was using adsense for a wallpapers website. The value of a click depends on the content you have on page and the country traffic source.
