The whole reason to provide your tax id is because uncle sam wants his cut of cpa income (well, any kind of income).

If you are doing business as an individual you provide your social security number. This way you must report any comissions as income on your personal tax return.

If you are doing business as a business as I would suggest anybody who is doing well in cpa to do for liability reasons, then you must provide your EIN number. If you have a business, then you will have this information on all your formal paperwork.

Again they need this information becase they are required by law to 1099 for anything over $600.

  • I highly recommend at least setting up an LLC. A corporate shield separates your business identity from your personal identity. Definitely talk to an accountant. I hear Legal Zoom is great for people who don't know much about setting up a corporation. LegalZoom: Online Legal Document Services: LLC,Wills,Incorporation,Divorce & More After you set up a corporation you'll want to create a business account to do all your business activty from.

Just a disclaimer that I am not giving any legal advice and only you know what is best for you. I'm just sharing my story of what's worked for me.

as thebillionairegirl says, if you start gaining traction with internet marketing make sure to look into setting up an LLC or another entity to mitigate personal liability.
