I was sitting behind my three over-sized monitors, IMing here...emailing there...Warrioring this and Blogging that while quickly finishing my creamy tomato soup in hopes to have a little quiet time while the rest of the pit was at lunch...

when the phone rang, and it happened.

We all deal with fraudulent and returned leads. It happens and we're all aware yet always assuming the best. And here it is: My affiliate called me after being sent a notice to pause traffic to a certain campaign due to fraud. Here's what went down:

Affiliate: Hi, I received your notice to pause traffic, may I have another chance with you guys?

Me: Well, the leads were reviewed and all came back fraudulent.

Affiliate: I know. I know exactly what happened.

Me: What happened?

Affiliate: I admit it, I was just trying to make a quick buck... I submitted the forms and credit cards myself. Can I have another chance?

Me: Wow. I appreciate your honesty, but we build our reputation by engaging in good business practices and encompassing strong relationships- this is unacceptable.

Affiliate: Well, I admitted, can I please have another chance?

...I think you get the gist... affiliate did NOT get another chance.

How would you guys handle this situation?

I would love to weed these guys out!

hmmm tough call man....Just depends on if you feel like giving him a second chance. I personally would consider a second chance but would monitor him very carefully. I know its unacceptable and shouldn't be tolerated.

I wouldn't give him another chance. He knew he was wrong to start with and chose it anyway in an attempt to make a few bucks. Give him another chance and he'll just come up with a sneakier way to screw you.

Someone who does something and doesn't realize it is one thing but deliberately breaking the rules is quite another.

your reputation is FAR more important than some slimeball affiliate. If you would have given him another chance, he wouldn't produce for you. By doing what he did, you know that he does not have a customer base or a list to sell by. Thus rendering him useless to you!

Trying to make a quick buck and yet he wants a second chance? Wow, he should've taken it seriously the FIRST time plus if he needed a quick buck, there's always Associated Content...trust me! I actually commend you for not giving him a second chance. We're all adults (or should act like adults), it's not like they're 6. I'm a newb and I take this EXTREMELY seriously and I really have a good heart but eh nope. You'd just have more problems in the long run if you dealt with him!

  I've noticed that (juvenile) mindset here and there. Sounds like spoiled kids who had parents who never said and meant "no" - and they can't believe they can't try again.

  Wow, even having the balls to ask something like that?..
  I'd have said, no and before you think of doing this again, your contact and details have already been sent to the FBI for fraud investigation. Then I'd block his IP, Email and a few other choice items.

That is for sure!

The other thing is we have to have our Advertiser's best interest in mind.

Luckily, we have a fraud detection software that catches these type of activities as soon as they happen

You did the right thing Bethany. The guy knew he was doing something wrong. It's not that he geniunely didn't know. Desipte the guy admitting his mistake, but no, dishonesty is one of the rarer things in my eyes which do not deserve a 2nd chance. As they say in Brasil, "trust is like virginity, you only lose it once."

  Bethany, I believe you should feel good about no second chance with this fraudster. He is feeling bad because he got caught. Who knows if he isn't scamming 3 or 4 others at the same time he was trying to do it with you. Online trust and reputation is EVERYTHING!!

  Oh my! This sounds like taking straight out of a parallel universe (or a TV show for that matter) It sometimes amazes me how far people will go just to earn some money.
  
  I think you did absolutely right in NOT giving your affiliate another chance. Yes, he might refrain from repeating his behaviour. And yes, his honesty gives him credit. But then: if being a cheat and being straight out honest comes that easily to him you really cannot tell what he will do next.

  I agree, off with his head. This is why networks screen and decline people all the time. Let alone all the flogs, Rachel Rae BS, Oprah BS, fake testamonials, has turned this into a tainted industry.
  
  Once they get all these dinks out of this business it will be better for those of us trying to make a buck honestly.
  
  I remember when I first got my Adsense account, I didn't even tell my friends about my site because I didn't want some well meaning friend going there and doing a ton of clicks from one IP, thinking they were helping me out.
  
  If you can't do it honestly, just don't do it, that should learn him.
