Affiliate marketers, search engine marketers (SEMs) and web analytics providers enable merchants to track page views and conversions on their websites. To track information, merchants include 1x1 pixel images, known as web beacons, on their web pages. The pixels then relay information about a page view or order to the third-party provider.

As a publisher, you don't have to place a pixel. In my experience, most pubs choose to place pixels. The basis of placing a pixel is to track the offer on your end so that you can keep track of your stats through tracking software. Doing so will allow you to track in line and compare your stats to that of the networks you are working with.
