The Daily Life of a Full Time CPA Marketer?

For those of you who do CPA full time for a living, what is your daily schedule look like?

What do you do, what are your tasks, how do you stay focused?

Thanks

    Very good question.

When I didn't have any ongoing winning campaigns, it became a matter of just launching campaigns. My thing is paid traffic, so I would look to launch 5-10 campaigns everyday (thanks Harry from ppc coach). Now, before you get worried, a "campaign" would qualify as a different traffic source or different country. So really you could have only 1 vertical/offer you're promoting.

I just found this mass approach to work best to find winners. So to give you a breakdown:

    - Consult with affiliate manager or check trending topics to see what to build my campaign around (trending stuff is the best to get cheap clicks usually)

    - KW research if on a kw based engine. Majority of my time is spent here if doing search based ppc. If doing content network I try to find thousands of keywords, going very broad at first. If I am doing demo/interest based stuff like POF and FB then I will really think hard on what demos/interest will relate to the offer.

    - Create 2 landing page styles to split test, plus 1 direct link if "allowed"

    - If doing banners which I usually do, create 3 banners for each banner size for my traffic source (google content for example). If testing facebook I will create about 200 ads to split test (easy with fb ad manager).

    - Setup tracking very quickly in P202

    - Launch campaign and typically don't touch it for 24 hours. Go onto the next campaign.

The next day will be based on the day prior in some ways. I will begin to look at my tracking and see where/if I'm converting and start chopping down from there.

    In terms of staying focused:

    - Unless there is someone I must urgently get a hold of (which is rare) I don't check my email more than 3 times a day.

    - I have AIM on but am in invisible mode

    - I don't do tons of competitive intelligence stuff, except maybe when entering a new market just to see who the big winners are

    - In the beginning I focused on getting really really good at one traffic source and learning how to scale that. Too much information overload will kill.

Ya I know that wasn't a very organized post lol sorry.

Wake up around 7am jump online check stats and make sure there is no fires. Then I take a walk a lot of times to clear my head and plan my day. After that head to the office and start working on the 3 levels of projects I have. Short term CPA campaigns, medium term offers we're building and then long term technology projects. Most of what I do at this point is overseeing and guiding a team. I don't run many campaigns myself anymore unless I start to feel out of the loop then I"ll fire up a couple and manage them myself.

On top of that there is always the constant networking I do with all the 1000 other affiliates I know. As well as manage all our network affiliates and advertiser relationships.

All fun stuff. None of which I truly consider work.

Hey Dayne... some days more than most, though my best success always comes when I'm grinding, that's how you get those "autopilot profits" the gurus talk about

By the way, I dunno why I thought of this, but if your name is really Dayne Dylan, you should get into movies or be some form of celebrity. lol.

Funny you should even say that, I've actually considered starting an IM blog/vlog, but have debated it. I think to myself, should I write/vlog about making money online (my main focus/expertise is infoproduct creation) or just focus on more products and focus my time on those? Still on the fence for now.

No man, you're doing it wrong haha ... vlog about some random crap/celebrities/gossip. That seems to be a real traffic machine. Dye your hair in 7 different colors like Perez Hilton (BTW I heard he was recently offered $20 million for his site) and make fun of Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus ..... you'll be a millionaire

I would rather focus on infoproducts and passive income...it's much easier...and I don't have to color my hair.

I can easily just say there is no typical day for me and that would be the most truthful response. But, that wouldnt provide much value, so let me give you a hint of some things I may be doing. Some days I focus almost exclusively on cranking out some test campaigns, others on setting up a line of split tests, others on ideating (coming up with different ideas on new methods, thinking of creative ways I can expand things that are working and change things that arent working...these are the days spent on my couch, in nature, on a boat, with just me and a whiteboard) yet other days are spent on fixing problems, trying to build a small outsourced team to do a test or maintain something already done.

Other days I spend on very high level stuff like working on my business plan. And other days I spend on the phone with people in the industry like affiliate managers and friends trying to gather little pieces of intelligence from everybody that I can hopefully combine into something more meaningful.

In all, I do have a set structure of things that need to do be done daily like emails, keeping in touch with you guys (my extended IM family) and looking over my campaigns (which I have somebody else do more regularly), but the bulk of time is spent on or more of the above tasks.

And yet other days are spent enjoying. I get into workaholic mode sometimes but I am trying to spend more and more time enjoying life...thats the whole reason I started down this crazy path! Just yesterday, I spent the day golfing and then went fishing and 4-wheeling at my small family retreat in the Poconos and only was on the computer for a combined 10 minutes.

And then there is always time to watch the World Cup. Okay, half time is over. Have a lot of soccer to watch today...like I said, not a lot of 'typical' days for me

        Go USA!

    Wake up ballin'
    Go to sleep stuntin'

Naw, I wake up at 10am everyday (working central time is good for me) and I work till about 3am every night (sometimes later depending on schedule). I'm at the point of overseeing the media buyers that work for me now so it's a bit different than it used to be.

    Persistence pays!

Yep, I have set some pretty damn steep goals so I will continue to work until I achieve them.

Keep in mind that success is relative. Some people would consider $100/day success, others arent satisfied until they reach 4 figure days and others even more than that. Thats the great thing about CPA marketing and working for yourself online. You control your destiny and can work as little or as much as you want to achieve your personal idea of success...whatever that may be!

    My day:

    7-9 am: Wake up

9 am: Get a hearty b-fast (so important for weight maintenance and overall health) and check out my email and stats.

10 am: Maybe do a little work, setting up campaigns, making adjustments, pursuing random projects.

12 pm: Get bored and walk the streets of my quaint Chicago neighborhood. Get some coffee (my stomach will hate me for this).

Sometimes I grab my laptop and hit a cafe, grabbing a seat among all the Chicago hipsters (BTW, what the heck is everyone else doing there?? I know they're not internet marketers, and not all of them are students or writers. And how can they all afford Macbooks?)...

1 pm: Get some lunch somewhere (I really should cook more).

2 pm: Go home and do more work if I'm so inclined.

Evening: More work? Check out a movie with my gf, play video games or any other pursuit that grabs me at the moment. Hop in a Zipcar (cars you can rent by the hour) and go somewhere.

    I loooooooooooooove working for myself

Entrepreneurship is a beautiful thing, it really is. And then you have internet entrepreneurship and that brings the benefits of entrepreneurship to a whole new level. The money, the time, the flexibility, the freedom, the feeling of growing an idea into a profitable business. All these are taken to a new level when your business is 100% online.

      I love it :p

    ChadH,

You really seem to have it down. I personally get cabin fever sitting in front of my computer for so many hours so I break my day up by going to the gym at around 1 everyday.

The beauty of working for yourself is that the hours you work are hours you chose. Between 9 and 10 is a good time to wake up for me. I usually end up working late. I am most productive between the hours of 10 PM and 2 AM I'd say. That way, no phone calls, texts, IM's or emails are there to distract.

You definitely want to be around for some business hours though to talk to your AM etc. Can't beat this job though, that's for sure!

Wake up at whatever time (I'm usually an early riser) and take a shower.
Check email, stats and updates while drinking my morning coffee
Cook breakfast, eat with family and send them off to work/school.
Check on existing content on websites to make sure all is up-to-date; revise those which are not.
Go over content finished yesterday and make any necessary revisions based on communications, updates, and stats.
Go out for errands, if any (bank, grocery store, etc.)
Upload content to respective sites (this includes article marketing activities, and also domain registration and website setup if necessary)
Make lunch, eat, and get some shut-eye (I'm a siesta addict, but then I'm up before the sun is).
Research new topics, markets, and/or products and make preliminary outline for promoting. Also sign up for programs as necessary.
    Write/revise/finalize marketing plans/articles.
Do some forum posting, blog commenting, social bookmarking and the like.
Check on work delegated to others and assign tasks as necessary (this includes housework like cleaning and laundry which I normally have someone do for me)
Make dinner while assisting boys with their homework.
Eat dinner with family, have a bath then read books or watch tv until bedtime (unless we go out for a party or something)
    Not very exciting......

There are many people that make a ton of money online that work their butts off but there are people that set up systems to generate substantial passive income and dont need to work that much at all. With traditional CPA methods, its tougher to set up sustainable passive income streams, but its still possible.

I am re-working my strategy a bit now to capitalize more on passive income streams so I can take even more time off in the future.

So the daily life of a CPA marketer is extremely wide and varied...even for people of the same income levels.

      This.

My days are so varied that it's really hard to work down any schedule. I used to spend time when I first got up checking out some of my SEO based sites but I decided to get an assistant for that.

I check stats/email/industry news in the morning - get all of the distracting stuff out of the way as soon as I wake up.

I take a look at my campaigns and see if there are any that I can expand over to a new traffic source, or expand upon that traffic source.

Then I check out my todo list for the day. Most of the time it involves networking with some friends in masterminds, building out at LEAST one new campaign per day or working on a larger one.

It's just so varied - but I can tell you that the biggest improvement I made to my day was keeping distractions to the morning and evening. Checking email, stats, forums etc I do before and after the real "work day".

A common trend here isn't necessarily the schedule of the successful CPAers. Everybody has a different schedule and different style of working. Some people work long hours, and other few hours.

The thing I notice is that all the successful CPAers are VERY DISCIPLINED. They dont just 'Go with the Flow' and 'Wing It'. They all have a set list of things that NEED to get done, and they make sure those get done. They seem to all limit when and how long they do their personal emailing and social networking. These can be tremendous distractions, so its important to keep them in check.

    Good luck CPAing all!
