At this moment, I am feeling I have been sold a bum steer. I have set up a campaign from MaxBounty on LookSmart only to find Maxbounty will not place the Javascript code on the thank you page of the offer. Even if this was done as a favor Maxbounty is not telling me?

Has any one else had this problem? Which CPA networks will accept JavaScript code?

Can LookSmart which provides JavaScript tracking be made to work with Tracking202.com?

I feel I have just wasted a lot of time and set up two accounts I cannot use to run the campaign.

Your comments please!!

    Hi David,

    Two possible solutions:

    1) Start making some decent money on MaxB and they may be inclined to change their minds.

    2) Custom programming (I'll assume you want to track keyword conversions).
    - set up a DB on your server with your keywords
    - when visitor lands on your landing page, swap out keyword with an id number
    - redirect visitor to offer with id number as SUB ID
    - compare your stats with network reports

    BTW, don't let it get you down. This happens.

    Best,
    - Jay

      Thanks jaggyjay

      I thought that might be the case with MaxBounty. The person who gave this advice to beginners should have known better.

      I want to direct link for this campaign, so it looks like I will have to look to another platform on which to promote MaxBounty where can use Track202.com for tracking.

      Is anyone using LookSmart for direct linking?

        Tracking202 will work just fine with looksmart. I have several campaigns running there right now that are being tracked using 202. And yes you can direct link.

        Be careful using these 2nd tier engines like looksmart as there is often times alot of bad traffic that you will need to clean up. Expect to take a loss until you can get things optimized.

        Keep you daily budgets small - like $10 - $20 dollars and schedule your ads to only run during US daytime hours like maybe 10 am - 9 pm est. That will help cut down on some of the bad traffic as you are testing.

        To really make looksmart work you are going to have to not only track keywords, but also the search partner feeds that are displaying your ads.

        Unlike Google, Yahoo, or Bing where you know where your ad is showing, with most 2nd tier networks your ad is being spread accross 100's if not thousands of "search partners"

        Some of those search partners or feeds will send quality traffic and some will straight up send you hundreds of clicks and blow your daily budget in less than a hour with no conversions. (this has happened to me several times on looksmart and others) It sucks, but it will inevitably happen to you on these lesser PPC networks so be prepared. Always set your daily budgets to something low like 10 or 20 dollars when testing.

        The key is to be able to identify which search partner is sending you all this bad traffic so you can call Looksmart and get them to block that particular search feed from your account.

        You need to pass the partner feeds in the subids of your affiliate links or use tracking 202 or something.

        To do this in looksmart is very simple. You just need to append the {feed} variable into the query string of your tracking 202 links.

        for example, after you set up your campaign in 202 it will give you a link to use in your ads destination url that will look similiar to this...

        http://redirect.tracking202.com?kw=

        ... in order to track the keywords and search partners from looksmart you will need to add {keyword:default}-{feed} to the end of you 202 link...

        http://redirect.tracking202.com?kw={keyword:default}-{feed}

        Then watch your keywords report in tracking 202 and you will start seeing a bunch of keywords and numbers like so:

        red shoes-65985
        blueshoes-56952
        redshoes-65986
        shoes-65215
        brown shoes-4255

        When you see a specific number that has tons of clicks and no conversions well, I think you can figure out what needs to take place after that.

        After you identify the bad partners and block them then you can focus on which keywords are converting and which aren't

        There is a ton of traffic out their amongst many of the second tier PPC networks, but you have to be able and wiling to track and analyze better because their is also a lot of fraudulent traffic that needs to be cleaned up before you will start seeing any profits.

        Hi David,

        Placing a Javascript pixel with MaxBounty is not something that we do or don't do as "favors" or as something related to how much volume an affiliate does with us.

        We currently do not have the technical ability to place Javascript pixels, that's all there is to it.

    Thanks John for your long and detailed explanation which I will now implement. Being cautious, I intend to keep the daily budget low and optimize quickly in order to make the campaign profitable or else try another campaign if I see no possible signs of success.

    I need to go back to LookSmart and Tracking202 and see how they integrate together. I asked the question because I had already set up the ads in LookSmart and when I signed up for Tracking202 I find I create the ads there. If I do not have to create the ads in LookSmart I just need to find out what I have to do to link into LookSmart.

    Steven, thanks for your input. I appreciate what you say, but if you had seen the video tutorial I have been following in which it shows me how the JavaScript code was emailed to the Adverising Manager at MaxMounty late on a Friday evening and then by Monday the tracking code had been placed on the thank you page of the offer so then the conversion results could be seen you will understand why I made the statement I did.

    I hear what you say, but it is not what comes across from the video that shows very clearly the results that came from the tracking by MaxBounty with the keywords set up on LookSmart.
    If as you say, JavaScript Code is not placed on the thank you page of the offer from MaxBounty how do you account for the tracking results I was able to witness in the video. Quite clearly, I was being shown clicks, conversions which matched up to the earnings shown on MaxBounty and the tracking results were showing in LookSmart.

    I have had a reply to another question sent to the organization involved with the video and thier reply supports my statement.

    How else was this fixed? From what I understand, you can only enter one tracking URL in the callback Pixel/URL box at MaxBounty. Because of this restriction, it was the reason to request the JavaScript placement.

      I don't think you fully understand what tracking 202 does. Tracking 202 does not create the ads for you. all it does is handle all your tracking needs. You simply input the things you want to track into 202 and it spits out a link that you will use in the destination url when creating the ads at looksmart.

      Looksmart and 202 do not link up in any way. you will still need to create the campaign, ads, and everythin else in looksmart (or any ppc engine for that matter) and just use 202 to create a unique tracking link that will go in the ads destination url. That link is what will record all the data into your 202 stats, like keywords, and which ads converted.

      Hope that makes sense. If you are still having trouble I suggest you watch the tutorials on setting up your 202 tracking that they provide. They really are quite good.

      Hi David,

      One more question. Did the Javascript code you send over have a <NOSCRIPT> tag? If so, the pixel in the NOSCRIPT area can be used as the tracking pixel. That may be what was done for the tutorial.

      Feel free to follow-up with me if you'd like.

      Thank you.

    Thanks John. I had better watch the videos. I just followed the steps in Trackin202 and came across the step to create a PPC type ad . The ad space is a little bit smaller than in LookSmart and I thought LookSmart ads are better. Thanks for saying I can use the ads already created in LookSmart.

    Steve. Thanks again. There is no <noscript> tag in the code. Here is the actual code from LookSmart:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    <!--//
    syndConversionType = '201';
    syndAccountID = '1074545';
    syndDomain = 'http://r.looksmart.com';
    syndFunnelValue = '100';
    syndDollarValue = '11.50';
    syndConversionTag = '2942';
    //-->
    </script>
    <script src="http://r.looksmart.com/scripts/convTracking.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

    If I can get just as good tracking results with Tracking202 I will put this to one side. If I come across another CPA Network at anytime offering this I shall know what to do.

    JohnAxe,

    Great advice on Looksmart - If I'm doing the same thing with 7search.com can you tell me how would I format the link for the keyword and search partner through using the tracking202 example again?

    Thank you in advance,
    Brian
