split testing landing pages

I have a question about split testing landing pages. Lets say Im using ppc as a traffic source. Do I make 2 seperate domains with the same exact landing page except domain B has a different variable (ie. different header image) then domain A? How many variables do you test per site? How long do you run a test campaign? Can you shed some light on any other issues regarding split testing?

    You don't need 2 domains, just one. You can create 2 completely different landing pages or test just individual elements (e.g. headline, image, color scheme, etc).

    Set up your campaign with one variation of the landing page and drive some traffic. Watch the numbers and see how that variation performs. Then make change (change an element or the whole landing page) and repeat the process. At the end, compare the numbers and see which variation has a better performance.

    Of course, the process can be a little bit more complex than this, you may want to to several tasks with each variation in different periods of the day or targeting diferent keywords, for example. But the idea is just to compare which variation is more profitable for you.

    About how much time and money you should spend on a test, it's impossible to answer this question. It depends on the offer, traffic source, cpc, etc...

    The simplest way to do it is to use google website optimizer. It can do both A/B and multivariable split testing.

    Another vote for Google optimizer. You can test a number of different variables at the same time all on one domain. The optimizer gives you the tags to insert in your page and handles everything for you.
