currently using hostgator for wordpress blogs, how many sites can safely be put on each hosting account. at $10 a month for ea. hosting account, it seems cost prohibitive to create lots of sites. what are you guys doing?
Are reseller plans a way around this?
is this even an issue to be concerned with?

Well, You can host as many websites with them as you can if you believe in their words.
But I think they will delete your hosting account if you host more than 30-40 sites in a single shared host.
And more than the number of sites hosted the main think to be concerned about is the resources those sites are using.
I think with hostgator you can see how much memory and cpu speed your sites are using if that is high then you should use either VPS or shared hosting.

I've read that hosting too many related sites that link back and forth to each other from one IP can flag you with Google. I'm not sure what the magic number is, but I would be careful not to look like a link farm.

Yes, I have already heard about that, too. It makes sense, but I'm not a SEO expert and can't give more information. Maybe the OP should look for help on the SEO forum.
