How do I find out which keywords are profitable?

I'm just starting out with PPC, and I'm wondering how to go about the whole finding profitable keywords process.

Thing is, I found a bunch of potential keywords but I'm wondering if I should make 1 ad for all the keywords or divide them up into separate ad groups - even before I know which ones'll work for me and which ones won't. It seems like a lot of work when I'm probably gonna scrap like 90% of the adgroups I create, but if that's what it takes then that's what I'll do.

Anyway I just wanted to hear what you guys think; should I divide my keywords into ad groups to begin with or just target all kws with 1 general ad?

Put just 1 keyword in to 1 adgroup.

To many keywords in a adgroup will hurt your CTR. Your campaigns must be as relevant as it can be.

    Hello,

I suggest you spend some time dedicating yourself to studying tutorials for Google Adwords. The big G have some fantastic resources to help you plan your ad groups and they go into much more detail than could be done in a forum post.

As for finding which keywords are profitable, it's all about tracking, testing, tweaking and optimising. To do this you need good software to help you in your analysis. Most of us use Prosper 202 or Tracker 202. Good software will help you greatly in rationalising your keywords.

    Cheers,

Having lots of keywords in one ad group is not recommended . Because, it could kill your Quality score .

    Hope it helps.

Yeah, I would do some research and look over the Adwords Training Center videos. When I was starting I literally sat down and watched these videos all day!

There is a lot involved in keyword research, so I cant go into too much detail here, but at the end of the day after your research is done and keywords are picked, only testing results will tell you what is profitable.

This is where you need to track at keyword level and as mentioned above, make your whole ad campaign super targeted and super relevant.

    Keywords make or break campaigns!

Here is how I organize my campaigns on search 90% of the time:

    AD GROUP #1
    keyword 1
    "keyword 1"
    [keyword 1]
    Ad 1
    Ad 2

    AD GROUP #2
    keyword 2
    "keyword 2"
    [keyword 2]
    Ad 3
    Ad 4

As you can see, I have one ad group per keyword (3 match types) and split-test 2 ads. Btw, I'm always split-testing ads, even if my CTR is 99%.

In order to find out which keywords are profitable you need to use a tracking software. I like Prosper 202, which is 100% free and self-hosted. There are also other good options, though.
