Sub Id's

Dumb question but can't find the answer anywhere or how to use them. The only things i can find say stuff like enter sub id here, do you just make up a name? What if you have a campaign that your doing like 4 different things, article, ppc etc for traffic.... how do you track that? I signed up for tracking202 and even after reading/videos it still doesn't make sense, like if your doing articles do you just skip the ppc tracking it tries to make you enter when doing steps since there is none?

but for the sub id there are various ones, there's one for seo tracking url, query string tracking, impression pixel tracking etc. Which do you use and for what (like say articles), and do you just enter a name or number? like subid=articles?

Sorry if that didn't make sense, as even network guides don't explain it
