If you were promoting an offer for the Australian market, would you buy a .com or a .com.au, Regards, Mick.

I'd say it really depends on the offer, how much "local credibility" you need and if you are building just a lander or more of a mini-site.

I haven't purchased a com.au for a loooong time so this may have changed - but don't you have to at least have a registered business name similar to the domain you want to purchase?

I guess the other option would be a .com but try to slip in an Aussie sounding term in there - like Aus or Oz.

    Cheers

I don't think you need a registered business name or ABN. Just go to Crazy Domains and you can get .au domains without any fuss

It really depends on the type of site and who will be visiting the site. If you are doing life insurance, medical insurance, or any 'personal' type of leadgen offer specifically targeted to AU then go with the AU specific domain. If you are just doing any ol' offer then .com will be fine.

Nope, still the same as it was back in 1997 when I got my first .com.au . From the Crazy Domains website:

To own a .com.au or .net.au domain name, you must be an Australian registered company or a business with a registered business number (ABN, BRN, BN).

The domain name you order should be an exact match, acronym or abbreviation of the supplied business registration, or it should bear a close and substantial connection to the domain name:

Imo .com.au would be better because it will give more credibility to your offer. But if you want you can buy both .com and .au and just redirect one of them to an other.

But for me, when I search sites in my country (france) I prefer to go to .fr sites rather than others, it's like it's more relevant to what I'm looking for....

You need a ABN to get a .com.au site. It's pretty easy to get one - if you're an Australian resident.

I'd buy both and redirect .com to .com.au or vice versa

I don't know what traffic source you intend to use or what type of product you will promote, but, honestly, I don't think that it makes a lot of difference. I almost always go with .com, even if I'm running the campaign for CA, AU, UK, FR, etc... For me, dot com works everywhere.
