An Easy $1000 - $4000 A Month Selling Hosting ...

Hopefully this will be an inspiring story. It's counterintuitive. Expensive offers are not harder to sell than let's say free trial offers. When you have CPA offers paying $90-$100 you only need a few to make a decent earning.

Over the years I have tested a few methods for cashing in with hosting offers. You get to pick the results (as my interests lie elsewhere)

Method 1. The Broad SEO Fight Method
I’ve used the search engines to milk some easy earnings. I’m not going to tell you about exact [or close to exact] keyword domain match, write the posts, install the plugins and build backlinks. The most important thing I found here is keyword segmentation.

There are a lot of … not very exploited SEO opportunities open for SEO marketers. I’ve identified three such open doors:
  1. Feature Targeting - You can browse several hosting forums and websites and if you pay close attention you’ll see people (buyers) are looking for very specific solution to their hosting needs – Ex. Cpanel Hosting, WHM Reseller Hosting, Bulletproof email hosting, HTML hosting, ASP hosting, PHP hosting, SSH hosting, Perl hosting, Python hosting, JSP hosting, Windows (2005/2007/2008/Millenium/XP SP2 SP3) dedicated server, Linux (redhat, suze, ), servers for gamers that want to play a game with friends …. and the list could go on (I don’t want to spoil the research for you, just dropping some hints)
  2. Script Targeting – There’s some demand to script oriented searches Ex. Wordpress hosting, Drupal hosting, phpbb hosting .. etc
  3. Opportunities Targeting – This is one red hot opportunity that I took. People are savvy. They are searching for discount and coupon options before buying. They are just on the verge of buying, credit card in hand when they just decide “Hey .. I might save some money! Why don’t I look for some discounts online first.” That’s where you come in. You want to rank on the top 3-4 results for discount opportunities. If they want to buy hostgator you’d better be ranking for hostgator coupon and hostgator discount. Bad news. The hostgator example is a very competitive example. Don’t do it. Good news? There are a lot more hosting companies out there offering high affiliate commissions. What you want to do is find 20-30 and build an affiliate website for each. Again I could provide a lot more examples here but if you dig on your own you’ll find good (not very exploited opportunities).
Method 2. The Newbie Cash In
I believe more and more people are joining the Internet Gold Rush each and every day. Unfortunately due to misinformation a large percentage fail to obtain a significant income online. However all newbies share a solid need for two things: knowledge and website infrastructure (domain name & hosting included).

What you need to do is set up a friendly introduction to internet marketing. Teach what makes you successful. Newbies may not even know what is wordpress or how to install it. You can help out.

Build a list of subscribers and give away your knowledge along with your personal choice of hosting.

Heck …. You can even host a webinar with it and teach them more advanced marketing strategies if they join your favorite hosting provider.

Think about it? Selling a $100 ebook is tough. You need veteran copywriting skills to make that happen. However, hosting is something they need (and can get you $70-$100 easy commissions).

I hope you can see now a bright yellow bulb suddenly appearing. It’s pretty powerful.

Method 3. The Site Flip
One interesting method I came across is giving away websites. You can easily install a premium theme, write 10-15 articles and place ads. If you’re a veteran SEO marketer you know the potential of creating such a site, know the value of your keyword research and the domain name.

Here’s the twist….

Instead of selling it, you can give it for free as long as they sign up to your hosting offer. How will you drive traffic to such an offer? I would say you should know by now quite a few methods …

The most important thing is presenting your offer and why is it such a great deal… and it should be a great deal if you’ve done the research properly and written quality themed content.
Traffic is easy … forums (marketing on forums is quite a large subject that I don’t want to go into here), youtube, ebay, classifieds sites, email, ezine advertising, adwords … and so on.

Method 4. A Soft Offline Touch
This method caters to offline business in your area (more or less). It’s easier to do it locally that’s for sure.

If you live in a medium sized town, you are (or should be) aware that new businesses come to live each and every day. Most of them need an online presence to let the world know they are now open and ready for business.

What you want to do is have a couple of web templates available that you can edit. It shouldn’t take you more than 1 hour tops to finish a business looking website.

What you want to do is … give it away for free .. errrm … in exchange for hosting which they definitely need.

Where would you find such businesses you’d ask?

Well .. here’s a couple of ideas: browse the local yellow pages (and all other local business directories) and find the businesses that don’t have a website yet. Learn a little bit about cold calling and then make them an irresistible offer … A free website.

That was one … Two. You can strike a deal with corner shops and hairdressers etc who deal with advertising for local businesses in the window or on a notice board. Most of the people who run these shops often run on fairly tight margins, have no idea about the internet except to read emails and will be intrigued at the possibility of a little extra money. Depending on your country you may also be able to make a deal with local lawyers who help out launching new companies. You can strike a deal where everybody wins.

And three … there’s always classifieds of people wanting business websites .. freelance sites … etc.

I’m sure if you put your mind into it you’ll be very successful with this.

Method 5. Paid & Working
Don’t neglect paid advertising. Adwords works like a champ. Especially when you couple with couple of the strategies mentioned above.

Method 6. Free … But Not Quite
Title says it all. You can start by offering free hosting services. I won’t go into the technicalities of doing that but let’s say your free hosting service can support 300-400 clients. You can bank on having your own advertising shown in their free website and also by helping them upgrade to a not free, but reliable hosting of your choosing.

To advertise a free hosting website is quite simple … There are quite a lot of directories of free hosting providers that will be more than happy to list your website. These directories get a lot of traffic so your 300-400 client list might fill pretty fast.

Problem is … after a while this traffic method will dry up as other new free hosting providers will push your offer to the bottom.

What you need to do then? Just launch a new free hosting website and do it all over again. Tedious .. yes … but profitable

Method 7. IM Forum Slip
There are a lot of forums (internet marketing, hosting, wordpress, etc …) where you can connect with webmasters. All you need to do is create a great headline that will serve as your signature. You can think and connect it with one of the methods mentioned above and you’re going to bring home the bacon.

There are a lot of subtleties to it … But you can only learn by doing.

Method 8. From Underdog to Superstar ….
All of these methods can be switched from affiliate earnings to a product owner revenue. Setting up a reseller hosting is not really hard. You can cash in a lot more money when it’s your service that’s selling. It may not be a pleasant idea to set it up first, but once you get the hang of making a solid income with hosting offers switching to your own offer will make more sense to you.

---

These methods might have some details missing but exposing them here should get your creative juices flowing and give you an extra angle to add to your affiliate mindset. You may have heard of a few of these ideas before.

It's my belief you still need to get organized, get serious, set aside x number of hours a day. And then review what is working and what isn't. This is something about myself I try and keep improving all the time. (It's easy to fall into a rut) I like to keep a spreadsheet or digital post it notes of all the things I have done and plan to do.

Digital post it notes are probably the geekiest thing anyone ever invented, but if I used real ones I'd just end up sticking them to random things like pets just out of curiosity to see how long they stay there.

I know I should’ve packaged this into a shiny ebook … but sometimes it feels good to give something of value to a great community.

Thank you Warriors ..
Your Usual Silent Lurker,
Harry

This could also easily be combined with recommending or setting up an autoresponder service as well.

Thanks Harry. This is a nice share indeed. I did hosting myself for a while, but pushed that aside to concentrate on IM. These ideas would work great for people that have a small hosting company to promote themselves. Lot's of good ideas.

Great content. I'm wondering though if it would be valuable to segment the 'newbie' market even further-- by tech savvyiness, age group (ie baby boomers trying the 'nets bandwagon) or even something like newbie apple fanboys

Harry - great information. I'm using Method 3. The Site Flip with hostgator through cj with some success. I probably lost some commission because of the way cj track sales. Can you share which hosting provider do you use?
