Facebook Ads vs Google Ads - CNN Story

I saw this published on CNN this morning:

Ad war: Google versus Facebook – Business 360 - CNN.com Blogs

In a nutshell, GM has opted to stop all Facebook advertising due to limited reach versus what it can get with Google. The story cites that FB only has a 0.05% CTR and reaches about 1/2 of what Google does as far as audience goes.

I've tried FB ads a couple of times with no success to speak of. Is this reflective of what any of you have found?

So many factors come into play here that cannot be quantified in a 500 word press release from Wordstream.

How does GM measure their success? They most likely don't at all. In a link to another article in that one it says Ford is INCREASING their advertising:

GM rival Ford (F, Fortune 500), meanwhile, says it is accelerating its advertising efforts on Facebook and other social media platforms.

"We've found Facebook ads to be very effective when strategically combined with engagement, great content and innovative ways of storytelling," Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker said in an e-mail.
So is it that GM doesn't know how to do it right? Yep. Same thing as with internet marketers who can't get a traffic source to work. They're just not doing it right.

You have a good point there. I'll be the first to call myself ignorant when it comes to PPC...this thread is the first time I've posted in this sub-forum at all. I'm glad to see the flip-side of the argument there, Coach.

For me personally - Google ads have been great for those ready to buy

People don't usually log into their facebook with a credit card in their hand

I think facebook ads work if you are looking to build say a community "Click here if you like Glee" or something where there is no DIRECT sale involved

This is the auto industry. They have problems when it comes to social media sites/ They just don't get it. Read up on the Toyota Twitter Superbowl fiasco.

Facebook is only 10% of the net. Google is just 30%. Google is not friendly to direct marketers anyway .......forget them!

Totally depends on how they put it together. Ford is doing well with it, GM is not.

Are any of you guys branding? Because unless you are, this article is irrelevant to most of you.

This is posted in the CPA part of the forums - which means that most of us are direct response marketers. We base our data on performance and immediate results.

I make a KILLING on Facebook everyday. And yes, people on Facebook will pull out their credit cards and can be in the 'buy' mood if you make them get into the 'buy' mood.

If you haven't found success with Facebook, it's because you gave up too easily.

    Affiliate marketing is dead.

I find your post fascinating, and I don't mean that sarcastically. I stay up in the main forum for the most part, but I love to drop down into the other forums as well to see what I can learn. I'm assuming that by "branding" you mean that you are creating a brand out of thing air, not promoting someone else's brand. For example, I read a WSO sales page yesterday about that "Bring the Fresh" brand. I have an entire brand that I won't mention here because I don't want to be accused of self-promotion, but I put it on everything I do in the markets I run it in. Is that what you mean?

I'd also love to read about the FB tactics you're willing to publish in public. I have literally run two campaigns that didn't do anything at all for me, but just the fact that so many companies use FB ads tells me that there has to be a way to do it correctly.

OMG that thread could be an entire WSO by itself. I've always thought that PPC was some beast that I shouldn't go near, but after reading that I may give it a shot as my other projects start paying off.

          Thank you so much David!!

I think that a lot of users or those that signed up on Facebook in the first place didn't join the social network to put ads. It was known as just a hub for keeping up with your old high school buddies, relatives and friends. Maybe that's part of why Facebook's CTR is lower than that of Google's.

All news will affect it because stock prices and ipo prices and ipo popularity are driven by one thing only, emotion.

If enough people think it should go up, the stock price will go up.

If enough people think it should go down, the stock price will go down.

All the rest, the analyst reports, the news reports, the quarterly reports are just fluff which forms people's opinions.

I've listened to webinars given by Brittany Lynch - an ex Google employee who says she demonstrates setting up $10k a month profit streams by creating a like page then using targetted facebook ads to drive traffic.
Facebook is not a site I spend much time on - but I have been thinking about paying for their traffic and sending it to my own sales or squeeze page.
Interesting that you are getting some people here saying it works and others that it doesn't.
Guess, like all things on line, you need to understand the tricks that make it cost effective?
