If you were to optimize a PPC campaign what would be the first few things you would do?

My campaign objective is to cut costs (low cpc) and if conversions are setup then increase conversions.
For the very first client I setup ~ I have a good ctr.
But then I have been handed over old clients for optimizing ~ whatever I do the ctr does not budge ~ the conversions remain almost the same.

Analyse track all keywords and cut off the negative one.

Depends if you are doing broad, phrase, or exact keywords.

Broad/Phrase keywords - look through your stats and find out which keywords are going through which are not making you any money after 500ish clicks (it various what your threshold is, but 500 clicks is a good starting point). Any of those keywords that aren't converting, add them as negative keywords so they don't get clicks anymore.

Exact keywords is the same basic idea, but instead of adding a negative keyword you can just delete the exact keyword from your campaign if it doesn't convert.

The other big thing to do when starting off is to test multiple ads. Depending on your budget, you should be running at least 5 different ads initially to see which attracts the most clicks.

With Google in particular, your CTR affects your CPC. So if you are bidding $0.25 for a keyword and get a 0.05 CTR, but the next guy is bidding $0.25 for the same keyword and is getting a 0.07 CTR, he will be paying less per click and his ads will appear higher than yours.

Also - get yourself a good ad management system (I would recommend Prosper202, it's free and works amazingly well) and make sure you are tracking all conversions through it. Most affiliate networks will have somewhere that you can put a callback command or conversion tracking code in their interface and it will automatically apply to all of your campaigns.

Alternatively, most affiliate programs will let you download your stats into a .csv file, if you setup Prosper202 properly and pass along the subid to your network for every click, you can import this csv into Prosper202 at the end of the month and get your ROI that way (this is what I do with SAS because they don't have the ability to add a conversion beacon to all their merchant partner websites).

I am not understanding why I need to add as a negative? Can I just pause the keyword?
      Broad you mean modified broad?

Also Prosper202 ~ how do you set up tracking with Adwords ~ you need a subid right?

Broad/phase keywords match anything closely resembling them when displaying ads.

So lets say you have this setup as a broad keyword: kitten

If somebody is searching for any of the following your ad will display: kitten, kittens, young kittens, tabby kittens, black kittens, and so on.

If you do proper tracking and discover that "black kittens" doesn't convert on whatever you are trying to sell, then you want to filter that keyword out. The only way to do that with a broad matching keyword is to add "black kittens" as a negative keyword. In adwords you do this by adding -black kittens as a keyword to your list (and that's how you do it in most other ppc systems too).

If you were doing exact keyword matches for your campaign, then yes you could just pause/delete the keyword from your campaign. But that doesn't work with broad matching because by it's very definition it catches anything closely resembling what you specify.

As for setting up Prosper202, you need hosting. Prosper202 itself is free, but it needs to sit on a domain that you have. What most people do, myself included, is install it on a subdomain.

subids are useful if you want to get a bit more advanced. What you want to do from the start is to track keywords. The way you do this is when you setup a link in Prosper202 it will give you a url that looks something like this:

        http: //mydomain.com/tracking202/redirect/dl.php?t202id=9122&t202kw=

That is where you send traffic to from Adwords. All you need to do is add {keyword} to the end of that and Google Adwords will pass along the keyword they were searching for when they clicked your ad:

        http: //mydomain.com/tracking202/redirect/dl.php?t202id=9122&t202kw={keyword}

If if you get 3 clicks, each search for "kittens", "black kittens", and "young kittens", Google would send them to:

        http: //mydomain.com/tracking202/redirect/dl.php?t202id=9122&t202kw=kittens
        http: //mydomain.com/tracking202/redirect/dl.php?t202id=9122&t202kw=black kittens
        http: //mydomain.com/tracking202/redirect/dl.php?t202id=9122&t202kw=young kittens

Prosper202 will keep that information and help you analyze it.

The next bit is to pass along subids to your affiliate network. A subid is basically a unique identifier for every click you get. I posted an example of how it works in another thread yesterday, here is the thread with the screenshots of a test campaign I have running: http://www.warriorforum.com/ad-netwo...neverblue.html

Seeing that you have a detailed link in your Sig that leads to advanced mcc account setup and procedure it seems a little strange that your asking that question ?

The link in his sig is about linking subaccounts to your primary account, it doesn't offer anything in terms of ppc optimization techniques. And realistically the only reason you would need to link to multiple accounts is if you are doing PPC for clients and not yourself since you can only have 1 adwords account.

The first and most important thing to consider when optimizing a ppc campaign is keywords. Make sure you give your keyword at least a minimum of about 200 impressions before anything. You can also try to increase your landing page conversion rate because it is very important.

It is also important to evaluate the source of your clicks, and block traffic from sources that don't convert if possible.
