VPS Hosting Suggestions

I understand in PPV Lack of Speed kills, I cannot yet afford dedicated hosting, but I want to try to do things right. Can anyone recommend a good VPS host, that is fast and somewhat inexpensive?

Thanks
Mike

Truth is, most hosts are the same!
Try and find a host that doesnt use the generic apache/cpanel setup. Beyond's more (expensive!) plans use litespeed - which is a commercial and fast web server.
You may look into having a managed host install something like lighttpd, or nginx + php-fpm + apc for you.

I would suggest that you start off with a quality "shared" hosting plan with a host that does not overload their servers. Cheap, bargain basement web hosts tend to jam pack their servers.

Remember, cheap is not always best.

As far as a VPS, what's your budget? Do you have experience managing/securing a server or will you need a managed solution?

I will need managed. I dont need cpanel. $50 / month isn't bad. I'm not looking for cheap. I''m trying to do this right.

    Thanks

I think most providers will include cpanel with a managed vps. We also do this. Is there a reason you don't want cpanel?

How much traffic are you planning on putting through? I think the majority like beyond hosting..

VPS can handle most PPV traffic. But a shared server is a definite no go.

    I also recommend Beyond.

I would recommend you to try Turnkeyinternet VPS. I'm using their package 4 and sending about 40k visitors. Never had an issue with them and it costs be in about $34 including cpanel license.

As long as you stay away from VPS hosting that is absolute rock bottom pricing, you should be fine for the most part. Those bargain VPS companies stuff their servers and SAN's to the absolute breaking limit while using subpar hardware, and it only takes one squeaky wheel on an oversold SAN to bring down the entire node at that point. Here are the pros and cons of a managed VPS versus dedicated/shared hosting in my experience.

      Pros -

1.) Ability to host multiple domains on one server. This is nice if you have a significant amount of relatively low traffic websites. A modestly priced VPS can handle a surprisingly large amount of traffic, as long as it's slow and steady.
2.) It gives you a chance to work on several ideas at once at a lower cost. Plus, you have the flexibility of using it for other random stuff like FTP, Lynx at work, etc.
3.) You get to learn how to use Linux in regards to web hosting, which is worth a good amount in of itself. It's a skill not many people have, and you can market it quite effectively once you're proficient.

      Cons -
1.) If you're paying a ridiculously low price, expect equally low performance. Google takes cues from page loading time, so ultimately this will lower your rankings if your VPS is serving pages too slow compared to your competition.
2.) A "managed" VPS is managed just enough so it won't go completely offline. No web hosting company can truly afford to bundle the overhead of providing and managing a VPS at such low cost, so expect less than stellar administration.
3.) No "bursting." Typically VPS only hosts use OpenVZ as their virtualization platform, and it allocates the lowest minimum amount to your container needed for it to perform. Since they can stretch a single node so far, this doesn't usually leave any hardware left for spikes in traffic.
4.) The performance of your VPS doesn't necessarily depend on you, as much as it depends on the other customers on your node. Spamming, DDoS, MineCraft servers etc can bring a node down fast. Hopefully you get provisioned on a node with nice people that are intent on doing the same as you are, but it's a roll of the dice for the most part.

If you need any additional insight let me know

Almost every VPS are the same.

But I'm using VPS local back then, and still looking for a good one.
