PPC to CPA Journal

Hey guys,

I am new around here. I like the CPA section of WF and decided to start a journey thread which will help me stay motivate and help me and others to get successful in CPA.

Let me tell a bit about myself first. I have been in to IM a few years but never too seriously. I made a bit of money with websites and then providing SEO services but post penguin, I have found it very difficult to sustain a business. I am back to square one and started with CPA last month.

I have been reading around and experimenting a bit and going to share what I learnt.

I don't have profitable campaign yet and infact lost a few hundred dollars. But, I have learnt a lot and my campaigns are almost breaking even on a few days.

Lessons that I have learnt.

1. CPA is not easy. You have to do the hard yards. There is no secret book that will enable to make you profitable campaigns. All they can teach you is strategy and you need to use your brain to implement it.

2. I beg to differ with the strategy of adding hundreds of thousands of keywords. Most gurus seem to belong to this mindset but I incur losses when I try to go this route. I seem to do well with a small set of keywords and optimizing and moving on to the next set. Add the most related keywords that are likely to convert and add more as you go along. It can take a few weeks to a month or so to make a campaign profitable.

3. Be ready to blow up money. You got to lose some to win some. But, blowing your money without any strategy is stupid. Also, some people immediately stop a campaign before doing a proper test. Some people continue a campaign even after its established it cant make money.

4. Important Factors that determine your success in CPA are Traffic Source, Traffic quality, Adcopy and Landing Page.

5. Email/Zip submits are not easy. Every one who starts CPA thinks that it would be pretty easy to get simple email submits. It's not easy and I'll tell you why. People have caught on to that now. So, Unless you are presenting it in a creative way, your conversions will be low. Even Cheap PPC traffic sources cost around 5 to 10 cents, and if your conversions are low, you will be losing money each day. If you have targeted traffic, I think its worthwhile to go for short form/long form registrations.

6. I cannot stress enough the importance of optimization. It's the most boring job but you have to optimize to succeed. If you think you are gonna simply run a campaign, forget about it and bring in dollars you couldnt be more wrong.

7. Each PPC platform has different quality traffic. Find out what niche gets lot of traffic and then find an offer for that.

These are the tips at the top of my head. I'll add more as I go along and share some tips and some unsuccessful campaigns(so that you don't repeat my mistakes). After venturing in to CPA, I have developed utmost respect for people who are successful in CPA because I realize now it takes a lot of creativity, hard work, dedication, perseverance and money to succeed in CPA.

So,What I have been doing

I have been trying out email submits with 2nd tier networks. I hopped on the 7 search bandwagon and my experiences have been mainly negative. I have got conversions but not enough.

I have also tried buysellads for buying ads directly on website. That is not working out for me at all and I tried around 5 websites. You have to be really smart to do mediabuys. Infolinks seem a little costly to me.

I have been trying a mix of other 2nd tier networks and my best campaign is breaking even these days. It's a registration campaign.

The reason I am posting this journal is to motivate myself and others as well as to learn from you guys. Understandably, I won't be giving out my niches, offers or other details. So, Please don't ask for those.

You'd get better feedback/advise from the group if you gave an idea of the following:

-How much traffic are you getting?
    -What is your conversion rate?
-Are you testing landing pages or just direct linking?
-What types of ads are you running? (Text, banner, etc)
-Are you routing all traffic through a tracking platform like P202 and analyzing the data it's feeding you?

Variable. Not stable. Ranges from 50-500 at the moment. I am doing a few diff offers atm.

For the offers that I am currently concentrating on, one is converting at 2%(Email Submit) and the other is converting at 0.5%(short form registration)

But, this is the overall data. If I only consider the last few days. They are converting slightly better.

      Direct Linking

-What types of ads are you running? (Text, banner, etc)
Mainly Text PPC on 2nd tier networks. I did banner ads but havent got a single conversion from them.

-Are you routing all traffic through a tracking platform like P202 and analyzing the data it's feeding you?
-I have been tracking by passing sub ids(Keyword, search term, aff id) and optimizing according to that.

What do you think about PPV traffic to Email/Zip submit offers?

I haven't really tried PPV yet. It is usually said that it is better to master PPC first and move on to PPV. Hence, I have decided to concentrate on PPC.

I have done some banner advertising through BuySellAds. They havent been working out for me.. I guess its just not my cup of tea. So, I am going to stick with PPC for a while.

I am experimenting with 7search, info links, Look smart as of now.

I am considering adbrite, bidvertiser and facebook PPC to try afterwords.

Could you answer a couple of questions on this then.

          For the 7 Search campaign.

          1. How big of a profit you were getting?
          2. How much you had to optimize and what steps you took for optimization
          3. What kind of offer was this. Email Zip submits/site registrations.

            1. Not much cause I'm not good at PPC, just 10-15$ a days. I moved to PPV after that.
            2. It was just a simple landing page, what I did the most is try many difference images and headlines. I also tried to split test call to action button and anchor text link (click here...etc), and I found the simple anchor text link worked better for that campaign.
            3. The offer is a adult dating one, single opt-in. I like adult dating offer cause it can work with many types of traffic.

What I suggest you is move to another traffic source after had few campaign on 7search cause I think it's not that easy to monetize. Goodluck mate

You can try to promote higher payout campaigns to generate higher income. I started my CPA journey by promoting zip submit offers and I barely can make profit during that time. After a few rounds of testing , I found out promoting cost per lead (CPL)/ cost per sale (CPS) offers can help to boost up the revenue and of course profit.

    Hey guys,
I decided to add in a small update

I am actually losing money at the moment because I have increased my bids to get more traffic. I have decided to let it run at a loss for a week or so. The fact that I am getting conversions means that this campaign is good. I only need to get rid of the bad keywords and bad referrers. I have started adjusting my bids for poor performing keywords and started blocking subids. The good thing is I have reached minimum Payout which is motivating. I have spent around $225 in PPC for these earnings. But, I learnt a lot from that money lost. I have also blown up around $150 in direct mediabuys which hasnt got me a single conversion. So, that was some money down the drain. Lesson learnt was that don't experiment with something you have no idea about.

The initial aim is to start getting my campaigns to profit however small they may be. I am going to wait for a week and update you guys with my Avg. EPC's and CPC's which will give you guys a better picture.

As of now, I will just give you the analysis since start of new year.

I was mainly dealing with offers B and C. I stopped running offer C and started running offer A as I felt it had a better landing page and would convert better and I was right.

Offer is doing well as it has been converting at around 4-5% for the past 3 days with EPC of 0.06. But my CPC is almost double of that. I am not too worried about that as of now. Once I run it for a week, I am going to optmize it so that it starts turning a positive ROI.

The weird part is that offer C was doing okay till 31st December from Traffic source A. I stopped running offer C and instead started running offer A. But, I am not getting any conversions from Traffic source A. Instead, I am getting conversions from a newer Traffic source B. But the CPC for Traffic source B is quite high.

Anyways, that was probably a lot confusing with all those A, B, C's and did not make sense for you guys.Let me know what you think.

The stats screenshots are from Peerfly. Judging from how much he's earning I would guess A and C are email/zip submits, while B was probably some kind of dating offer. But that's based solely on the payouts and I could be totally off my rocker lol

I am gonna add in a minor update, explain my strategy for this month and list the mistakes that I have done so that a beginner should not do the same. The thing about CPA is that you don't learn anything until you do it. WSO's, Ebooks and guides can help you so much.

    A little analysis on yesterday.

Yesterday was the best in terms of amount of money I got. But, I lost quite a bit too. The EPC is 0.03 and CPC would be around 0.09. So, I am losing a bit of money in and I need to reign in.

I am gonna set a budget and gonna try to break even atleast from now on. I can't afford losing 30 bucks each day.

So, Mistakes I have made that you should not repeat

    1. I thought this was gonna be a cakewalk.Don't expect to profit soon. I would suggest you have atleast $1-2k that you can afford to waste. Don't jump in the CPA bandwagon with a couple hundred bucks. You will lose that as well. Ofcourse, you can try free traffic initially but for paid traffic you need to have money to burn.

    2. I started running campaigns and stopping it if I did not make a conversions after spending $20 bucks. Don't start running campaigns and stopping. Pick a good offer and stick with it and test it out comprehensively. I have been reading that successful guys run a campaign on at a loss for 6 weeks and then they have they data to tweak it enough to turn a positive ROI.

    3. I was not tracking properly. I made some silly mistakes in tracking. Sometimes, I was just tracking keywords and not other subids. Its important to be gather comprehensive data so that you can make decisions.

I have a question. How are you persuading visitors to check the CPA..Do you have a landing page with an Ad letter or are you just linking directly to the CPA offer?

I am direct linking to the CPA offer. I have selected a well converting offer which had a good landing page. Also, I have a compelling ad copy which is getting me High CTR and conversions. Ofcourse I have tested a few ad copies out.

Have you tried facebook ads for promotion? I am new into CPA too. However, I am thinking that throwing out money just for testing is not an option for me. I mean if the Ad is good enough and your landing page is well crafted then even starting with $50 you should make a 150% or even more.

It's good that you are aware of the mistakes you have made and are actively trying to learn from them. So many of my publishers continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. As you said, you are going to lose money at first, but the best way to look at it is that you are paying for information

You will find the right combination and turn a profit. It's just a matter of time. Good job!

No, I haven't tried Facebook yet. They do not accept direct linking I think and I am technically challenged to create my own landing pages. Also, I don't have any design skills either. Once I start making some money via PPC, I'll surely try FB, POF.

CPA is where you get to have a landing page with an optin besides it right?
And every time someone submits their name and email you get to earn from that right?
If I may ask, what do you give in return for their email submission and where did you get them?
I plan to make a landing page with an optin as well but I don't really have any idea what to give away since I am still a beginner at IM.
