[Guide] How to Split Test Ad Copy on 7search

7search has this really annoying feature in that you can only have 1 ad copy running for an entire campaign. It's a major pain for those of us that like to test ad copies. They do have a workaround on a per-keyword basis, but that's too much work.

So I found a better solution.

I called up 7search a few days ago and told them I wanted to split test ad copy ad asked them if they had a way of making that possible - it turns out they do.

They have a feature (which is turned off by default on all accounts) called Campaign Scheduling. Essentially you can schedule what days of week and what times of day your campaign will run. The guy I talked to told me you can use to it basically create two identical campaigns with the exact same keywords and schedule them to run at different times of the day.

So I figured why not, let's try it out and they turned it on for me.

Here's what it looks like when you turn it on for a campaign:



That shows that I have that specific campaign set to run every alternating hour.

It takes a minute to figure out how to use the scheduler, but here's what it looks like when you are trying to configure it:



And here is "VersionB" of the campaign with the exact same keywords and bids but different ad copy:



The Green box indicates when this particular campaign is scheduled to run (it takes a few tries to make it work when you start using it, there is no instruction manual but once you play with it a bit it's pretty easy to use).

It even shows it in my local time which is really nice

So now I can run 2 (or more) campaigns with the exact same keywords and test the ad copies. When you pass your traffic through P202 you can then pass along on a c variable to identify which ad each traffic comes from.

The only downside of this is that it is a bit of a pain to figure out the interface for the scheduler, but once you figure it out it's very useful and you can now split test ad copy

To activate Campaign Scheduling in your 7search account, you simply need to call 7search and ask for it (just like you do for the ability to block affiliate ID's).

    I guess testing ad copy and collecting day parting data at the same time could be challenging. I've always just used the campaign scheduler to pause my campaigns for days and times that they aren't profitable.

    This is a good idea though. I've always just alternated between ads each week.

      I've done the same thing in the past, but there can even be lots of variation from week to week on campaigns. Not to mention that it takes a long time.

      I actually really like this method. Collecting dayparting data is still feasible. You're just essentially measuring in two hour intervals instead of one.

      Scheduling is still doable too. Just stagger the hours for the times when you want the campaign to run.

      Still not a perfect solution, but the best option I've seen so far.

        I've used it for campaigns that saw a spike in traffic during certain sporting events, so I just built the campaign schedule around these events. Traffic I was getting on off days didn't convert at all really.

        Just comes down to what sort of offers you work with I suppose.

    UPDATE: When I posted this thread this morning I modified one of my existing campaigns to use it. Here's the result after a few hours of testing:



    VersionA had 2000ish impressions before I setup the split test, so my campaigns have actually gotten:

    VersionA: 661 impressions
    Versionb: 672 impressions

    I'd say it definately works

    The only annoying part is using the scheduler the first time. It shows you a grid of hours of day for the 7 days of the week (see the screenshots above).

    To make the scheduler work, you click on the little checkbox for one of the rows or columns to highlight the entire row or column, then you click "OFF" in the little box on the side, then on Save.

    It would help if there was a little guide on how to use the scheduler, I must have saved it about a dozen times before I figured out you are inputting when NOT to run the ads instead of when to run them lol

    Hi Christian,

    You still have to create a new campaign by hand, right? I'm looking to duplicate a campaign, then make small changes to the ad copy (keeping all the keywords and bids the same for true A/B testing).

    Is there any way to do this in 7search?

    That's actually sick. I would suggest you alternate the times and days, rather then just the times. Assuming their service works correctly, the scheduling grid should look like a checkerboard rather then alternating rows (with the second campaign having the opposite pattern obviously.) This should eliminate most of the time/conversion statistical correlations. The way you have that setup now, there might be a timing issue that affects that data.
