I can't stand them as a user. I've never promoted them either.

I despise content lockers. I think they're pretty lame. Especially on Youtube when they have a new Movie out, "Watch Full Movie Online". Then you gotta fill out a stupid survey to watch it. Not once after I filled out one of those surveys in the past did it ever direct me to the movie advertise.

So yes, I hate content lockers.

What's the point of having a sig if no one buys from you?

      hahaha yup pretty much agree.

My main problem with them is like Saintsfan40, they never give you the free content after you fill them out.

If they worked better, I would use them more.

First users start hating them, then networks - in that order. I have used them, but only when I really, really, wanted something. The other times I couldn't be bothered and left.. I guess that's good and bad

I also hate it. But, standing as the author, we should find the solution for that.
For me, I'll attract repeatitive visitors first, give them valuable contents; they'll know the usefullness of the contents. After that, we could lock some of contents & make it balancing. Reliable and useful for visitors, they wouldn't mind unlocking that contents better than taking out their credit card or pay real cash. In addition, if the contents are really valuable to the readers, I'd give them alternate choice of "Content Unlocking" & "Buying the Content" with the same price I got from content unlocking.

I just wanna tell you that most of the links in the signature are trash and/or a trap to make you pay!

I hate content locking, too. I won't do it. If I'm searching for information about something and I go to a site that has the content locked I just 'X' out and go to another site.

I can think of a couple of solutions but I'm sure that some of the more seasoned Warriors will have much better ideas for you. One is that if your content is valuable to users as you say it is, relevant offers (ads) on the site could be profitable because the users will find those valuable as well. Another option I've seen is asking for a donation.

Content lockers work if you have something people really want. They work even better if you get what you unlock because you're likely to get repeat "unlockers". I view Content Locking as a quick way to score a buck with out much care for your visitors. If you have somebody willing to give you information, you are better off in the long run to capture that information for yourself rather than giving it to somebody else for a $1.

I can't stand them either, there are other ways to have the same effect that are more "friendly" to the user.. such as offering something free for someone to join a list

Well no offense that is really a common sense question, If you went to a site that had something you think you were interested in would you be annoyed if a content locker popped up asking you to complete a offer to see content,

I know i close the window, There is too many web pages out there that im gonna fight with a content locker to read about a certain category when google showed me 3 other pages of results

content lockers work great with reward sites, if you are using them for just page content that is a sure way to drive users away

If they weren't almost always a scam they would work well but they are a endless loop of crappy, ridiculous "offers" that never ends and never give you the content you want.

Most people just try them once and never more.

They can work well if they are tailored to your site and the interests of your visitors. The more customization, the better the results.

    • Yes, people hate them.

Yes, publishers can still make a tonne of money from them.

Just don't use them on any projects from which you are actively trying to build a solid brand, unless you want that brand to be associated with annoyance.
