Huge traffic but no money

Here's my Google Analytics for the most recent month:

I have tried:
PeerFly
MaxBounty
CPMFun
Advertising.com

Due to recent Adsense Ban, I had to use the above. I used to get 10K a month on Adsense alone. Right now, with the above, only advertising.com has the most profit.. but it's like 40-50 bucks a day.

I get tons of clicks on the CPA networks above, but not converting.

What's wrong?

First, could be the type of offers you're promoting.
Second, might be your landing pages.
My advice: Split test it all. Try different offers to see which ones works well
    Also try different landing pages.
    Good luck

NO landing pages. This is a website.
So... you guys are telling me that this can indeed happen even an a site with such traffic? There are certain months when I get more than 2 million page views a month.

You should dig into your analyitics and see what your bounce rate is, Having traffic is great but how are they engaged? what subject are they looking at the longest and where is the traffic coming from?

You are very close to making it happen but need to figure out what your visitors are looking for and if your website is delivering that and put that in front of them.

If google banned your adsense account then finding out why that happened would be a good start.

I feel your pain bro. I have a high traffic site that pushes big #s too - but CPA is only going to work if both your niche and the CPA offer are ultra targeted. For example, if your site is about bodybuilding supplements and the cpa offer is a body building supplement... then it'll do well.

If adsense is no longer an option - you still have alternatives. Advertising.com and other CPM networks are ok. But the payouts can be a bit anemic with less than $1.00 CPMs.

Of course, you can do your own thing... setup Open X (or similar) and sell your ad space. Several solutions available like the Rubicon Project, Pubmatic, etc to alleviate the headaches involved.

You might also want to look into 3rd party ad selling solutions like BuySellAds, Adsell, OIO Publisher, etc.

      Hope this helps.

It's really hard to say, I don't think you've mentioned your niche, the offers you tried, what types of ads you tried and how many different of variations of all of the above. All of that would be needed for us to try to help.

It's a video sharing site. It was doing well with Adsense.. then the inevitable Ban just like the others. The account was banned because of the iFrames. Basically it was not our fault.. we allow others to embed our videos to their sites by using iframes. The problem was that the iframe itself contained an Adsense code. It was a mistake and we're suffering for that mistake.

I feel sorry for you, man. I used to be in the same situation. High traffic with no $$$ and Adsense didn't pay as much as it used to about a year ago.

My suggestion is to figure out your demographic and to affiliate or create/sell a broad product. Even something like weight loss. You'd be surprised at how well stuff like that sells across all demographics. Or amazon ads for nike shoes, etc.

  • Running with CPA networks will involve learning ad optimization etc.

If you're looking for a simple replacement for Adsense, then look to other display networks.

For a video sharing site, I'd suggest the Rightmedia (/ex Rightmedia) type of guys.

    CPX
    Xtend (matomy)
    Harren
    AdPerium

The first ones that spring to mind from the top of my head.

I think your site is too generic to do well with CPA. Think about it. People go to the website to see a funny video, they get their funny video and then leave. There's no room for CPA there. It's different if someone goes to (like jag said) a weight lifting forum, looks for supplement reviews, gets a good review, sees the ad on the right side for the supplement, gets to a landing page that says the benefits (that were backed up by the reviewer) and then buys it.

It's super logical if you think about it.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7747305].message }}
    • I think your site is too generic to do well with CPA.

Not true. Any traffic can be monetized with some sort of CPA offers.

      Traffic like this?

Look at the offers that the CPM networks run internally on similar sites.

You'll find lots of Mobile Pin Subs, possibly casual dating, free to play gaming.

The review site process you are talking about is just one method.

If you want more information about this, let me know, rest assured a lot of people are making a lot of money from these types of offers.

With that huge amount of traffic you should try sites like buysellads or blogads.

Get some direct advertising sales on your website. Have you tried it?

To be honest I have tried the other side of the fence from where you are with them but I found the service to be terrible. They are only interested in whats good for them, they dont care about customer service.

Huge traffic doesn't matter if it's crap traffic.

You can have 1,000,000,000 uniques but if it's crap it's crap.

A video sharing site is not going to convert on CPA offers. You need to look at adsense alternatives I guess.

    PPC-Coach,

    Yes, my thoughts exactly.

Before worrying about anything, I would setup split testing. With a high volume, you should get a clear winner..... Unless those "uniques" are bots.

Before I start, this is my opinion, it aint gospel and should be treated as such.

I would punt the idea of monetizing via CPA out the door str8 away. With the numbers you get Adsense was working because it was tailored to what the person was normally searching for, whereas CPA is tailored to what you think the user will be interested in.

    Theres a big difference there.

Why not offer them freebies in order to sign up to lists? Then sell solo ads to the list. Obviously you will need to beef it up but its an idea.

Why not try infolinks? I dont know your site so cant comment on what material you have but its a mini Adsense so it may bring in something.

Also remember CPA traffic is geo targetted so you could find people clicking on it and then being redirected.

With the figures you are getting I would defo be selling some ad space on your site.

Just a few to get you thinking

I would test and track the ad copy for your banners as well as the clicks you are getting for each banner. Also, make sure the offers you are putting on your website are related to your website content.

This may seem elementary, but don't put a motorcycle ad on a gardening website. Sometimes we forget the most basic things.

In my experience, it's always a combination of factors - probably in this order:

    1. Powerful creative and/or headline. Regardless of your ad type, be it a banner, a landing page, a text ad or a solo mail - you need to catch people's attention. Just how important this is can only be appreciated after you waste a few hundred $$...

    2. Solid offer. Whatever you're selling must be TOPS, and if it comes with a free gift - all the better (as long as it's a GOOD freebie).

    3. Appropriate Network. Unfortunately, the only way you'll really know is by trial and error - or by following a reliable guide. Not all networks work for all things. For IM products, for example, most ad networks will be pretty useless, etc. If you're selling a "hot" - and I mean HOT product, most networks will work to some extent. But the more specialized the product - the more care you need to take with your network selection.

    4. Careful demographic targeting (which the ad network must support - most will SAY they do, but only experience will prove them correct).

    5. Track your creatives, landing pages and other ads to see which ones convert the best.

    6. Consider also your overall strategy. More often than not list-building (e.g. by offering a VALUABLE free product) should precede sales. But it depends, of course.

I can tell as a merchant that we don't allow free video streaming/downloading websites into our program. Not because we don't like them, but because over time this kind of traffic has proven to be of a low quality. People came to your site because they are not willing to spend money, correct? Then use this approach when choosing your CPA offers.
Something with free trial, no commitment or any other freebie might be more appealing to them and will help you bring the CR up.
    Good luck!

      Nope.
If you have a video site about EVERYTHING then.. it is very untargeted. But our videos are not just videos, they are specific to our audience. Almost 80% of our videos are uploaded by users and we are talking about close to 1.5 million short videos

    First, are they U.S. visitors?

Second, you just got many members (according to your first post) messaging you to run their ads and they are willing to pay you, and you reject their offers?

rickjerk321 is right, majority of your traffic could be from outside of the US so even if your sign-up or buy anything from the offer, it doesn't count.

Try to understand the demographics of the traffic coming to your site and find offers best related to them.

Try build a list from that huge traffic and you can send them more targeted offers later on.

With a landing page, it helps with the conversion most of the time but split test just to be sure.

Like some have mentioned already, it's hard to know what the problem is if you don't take all the factors and analyze them together- GEOs, CTR, Banner characteristics, banner formats, types, etc.
As an ad platform manager myself, I can tell you that it is next to impossible to evaluate any results if these characteristics aren't taken into account. Also, it may very well be that CPA is not the model best suited for your type of traffic. Have you considered trying rev share?
