CPA landing page question

Let's say for example I'm promoting a dating offer on POF where I get paid when someone signs up.

If the person simply needs to sign up why do people talk about creating your own landing pages when doing CPA?

In what situation would you actually need to create your own landing page?

Most newbies sees landing pages as an "extra step" between the conversion and the visitor, when in actuality a well built landing page will always increase conversion rates. Your landing page "pre-sells" to the visitor and gets them in the right mindset to convert.

Check out this case study - it takes a profitable campaign utilizing a landing page, then it removes the landing page to see what would happen. affbeast.com/do-landing-pages-really-increase-conversion-rates/

There's also a study that shows that once a visitor does a simple commitment, then they're more likely to complete an even larger commitment. For example, they've committed themself to clicking on the landing page's CTA to see the next page, since they already made that small commitment, they're more likely to convert because they have already put in the work. I don't remember where I've read that, but if I find it I'll come back and link the study here.

So you pitch it the user better and get them excited to join.

Also you could target your demographics better on your landing page, by saying things like "Lots of Smokers."

    Just an example.

Landing pages let you bridge the gap between your targeting and your offer. Let's say your offer is a mainstream site like Matchmaker and your targeting a niche like gamers (example only) you would need a lander to sell Matchmaker as the best dating site for gamers. If someone clicks your ad about gamer dating and just lands on Matchmaker they have no incentive to join.

Landers also give you more opportunities to get the most out of every click with things like re-targeting/email optins/exit pops/mobile redirects etc. etc.
