Facebook bans dating affiliates?

Taken from It's Official: Facebook Bans Dating Affiliates - CharlesNgo.com - Affiliate Marketing. Internet Marketing.

There's been a rumor for a few months that Facebook might start phasing out affiliate marketers who promote dating ads.

It looks as if they're finally started taking action.
If you try to submit a dating ad on Facebook, you might get a rejection saying:

"Reason(s): It looks like you submitted an ad for a dating service through one of our self-service advertising tools.

Unfortunately, ads for dating sites and apps are only allowed from approved advertisers at this time.
If you've read the guidelines in the Help Center and think your ad follows the rules and should have been approved, please let us know.

If you'd like to advertise your dating service on Facebook, please follow this link to learn more.

If you would like to become an approved advertiser, an application form may be available from February 15, 2014. If you have any questions about this policy or feel that your ad is compliant and was incorrectly disapproved, please contact us."

Not only are dating ads going to be rejected, but anyone caught running them will get their accounts banned.

Starting now the only people allowed to promote Dating ads on Facebook are white listed advertisers and the affiliates that the advertisers have approved. For example: Match.com gets approved to advertise. They want their top 3 affiliates Bob, Steve, and Sharkeisha to promote on Facebook. Match.com will submit their Facebook account ID's to get whitelisted.

Anytime these 3 submit an ad, their account will be labeled as "approved for dating ads".

However, Match will be held accountable for these affiliates as well. If Bob gets caught submitting titty images, he puts the advertiser's account at risk as well. It's in the best interest of the advertiser to only allow the affiliates that they truly trust.

Why would Facebook do this?
The ads were getting too risque (cleavage, half naked pics) and hurting the user experience. According to my source, dating ads were getting reported at three times the rate of any other niche. Not only were the ads bad, but some guys were actually sending users to casual dating offers (sex sites).

What Facebook Wants Dating Advertisers to use

What affiliates were actually using

Facebook's all about a high click-through rate and it was pretty much a race to see who could get the most scandalous ads through .

My Analysis
With every situation, there are winners and losers. Here's a quick analysis:

The Winners:

Mainstream Dating Advertisers - Less competition to deal with. They will also have better branding now since dirty images aren't allowed.
Facebook - This will improve the overall experience for users.
PlentyofFish - If you want to promote mainstream dating now, PlentyofFish is one of the few viable choices left. I'm sure there will be a surge of affiliates signing up soon.
White-listed affiliates - Facebook is still allowing certain affiliates to promote on the platform. These guys will have the advantage of an even higher barriers to entry for their competitors.
Facebook affiliates in general - There's plenty of other niches to make money on such as gaming. Click costs will go down since you don't have to compete against boob ads.
The Losers:

Affiliate Networks - Most networks have dating as a part of their portfolio and revenues will definitely go down. However I don't think it'll be that drastic since most networks are diverse with adult and other niches.
Newbie Affiliates - Many guys had their first profitable campaign through Facebook Dating. eHarmony in Australia was actually my 2nd ever profitable campaign back in 2008. This change takes away one of the tried and true ways for a newbie to break into the game.
Adult Advertisers - Facebook traffic's always been higher quality than porntube traffic since affiliates could filter out the audience by age.
Facebook Dating Affiliates - The best route is to try and get another vertical working, or see if you can get whitelisted by an advertiser.
Affiliate Marketing is Dead?
Overall I don't see this affecting the industry too much.

Facebook's been a pain in the ass in 2013 as far as banning accounts and retro-disapproving ads, and they're going to keep making things worse for affiliates. If Zuckerberg had his way then Facebook would have no affiliates, and the only advertisers would be big brands / local mom and pop shops.

Can you really blame them? The nature of being an affiliate is to push the edge. Every CTR and conversion increase means more money in our pockets. When we're all competing against each other, then some of us are going to cross the line.

Affiliate marketing is survival of the fittest at its best - the smart ones will find a way to adapt.

P.S. Don't ask or comment on how to bypass the new rules because some members of the Facebook ads team read this blog. Play it smart.

They have been cutting down on affiliates in a while.

They haven't added anything in their ToS or ad guidelines and I have been submitting dating ads daily and still haven't got that message, but I believe it can happen.

But since this attitude isn't new, I don't think it will change things a lot. Cloaking, multiple accounts and other techniques that affiliates are using now probably won't lose effeciency because of this.

People always have to adapt themselves to new situations. As affiliates, we have to do it even more often, but it's not hard to solve this with a drop of creativity.

EDIT: I just checked again and, yes, there is actually a small change in their ad guidelines (there can be others that I didn't notice): "If you would like to become an approved advertiser, an application form may be available from February 15, 2014. If you have any questions about this policy or feel that your ad is compliant and was incorrectly disapproved, please contact us."

Yes, I was reading this post earlier, it is good.

I have been moving away from doing Dating on Facebook over the past year naturally, so I am in an OK place. Mainly because I can't use Fanpages + Dating too well.

If you're interesting in dating, IMO POF is the place to be (I even recommend this before the recent Facebook issues)

This is actually the second time Facebook has done this that I recall at least anyways, a few years ago they made a huge crackdown on dating affiliates

This'll definitely hurt me, but it also means that there'll be less competition for white-listed affiliates.

Has anyone been whitelisted yet? I just emailed a dating advertiser, one that I do pretty major volume with, to be a whitelisted affiliate.

I do agree that PoF will be the next best place for affiliates to run dating on, but it's already hard enough as it is getting profitable there because of the competition. If everyone from FB floods over to PoF, things will just get a bit more tricky . I'm profiting on PoF right now and the margins are already smaller (than I'd like) as it is. We'll see what happens I guess. Adapt or die!

This notice doesn't matter to anyone cloaking. They know what they need to do now. This might matter to average affiliate who hardly have any technical know how or is limited by his ethics.

I think "Facebook" has the same problems we all do, when is enough too much. In other words using visual images to sell a product is great but what are the boundaries of taste and when are they exceeded, which leads to what to do at that point. An age old question, especially in a society like ours which was primarily puritanical, at least during its inception, hence our unique social foundation. The bill of rights and the ideas of separation of church and state. With this code of individual freedom grounded in a strong religious moral imperative it is no wonder our modern society is perhaps culturally bipolar, especially when it comes to sexual expression. On one side of the issue one could argue all is fair as long as it isn't inferring violent or disgusting images (I am being brief as I pressed for time). Also, the age of the viewer becomes an issue. R rated sites/"Facebook" Advertising pages anyone?
But ultimately "Facebook" can exercise there rights as owners of the site. Also, I always think people should be able to understand the ideas of good taste and respect other peoples comfort zone (at least visually, morally and such). Self respect and respect of others is dying in our culture! These issues always perplex me,hence my difficulty in expressing myself.
I think there are easy solutions, but some factions want to push the envelope and other factions want to keep anyone from touching the "metaphoric" envelope. I think "Facebook" can do what they deem is proper (Defined by the corporate philosophy they have in place) with regard to their taste and standards.
One problem, especially for the libertarian in me, is just as "Google" appears to have drawn a line in the sand and started standing firm they have alienated many early champions of there service. Believing they know best, not responsible individuals.
I wonder if they (The "Google's"," Facebook s", "Amazons" etcetera) have become so focused on their corporate philosophical stance that open discussion and growth, elements important to a free and growing society, have been replaced by the corporate model and economic success. Is our freedom being disposed of and replaced by the drums of uniform behavior?

Recently I have had very hard time to promote dating offers at POF. Is it just me or this niche got really saturated?

POF can get saturated depending on your targeting

Also, don't be scared to dive into international traffic at POF

This thread is almost a year old, but things haven't changed. The issue with other frowned upon niches you can do different work arounds, but with dating it is hard because you want the user to go directly to the offer ASAP.
