So my website is picking up and I could use a few pointers!

My website is about a popular game that's currently in beta. (If it's okay to disclose it here, let me know - I don't mind sharing the links). The website has been through many, many iterations, to finally settle on a certain aspect of the game.

I threw up a couple of ads, started off with Adsense, then a company called Waypoint Media reached out, asking me to show their ads. I figured why not. Right now it's getting about $0.5 RPM.

Here's the unique visitors chart:

Each dip means the idea didn't work out, followed by a pivot. But looks like I settled on a section that people are interested in. Site started around June last year.

Last month it got about a million page views. The challenge I'm having is I don't know if I'm on the right path - should I be earning more? Is 0.5 RPM respectable or too lil? Just wondering where I stand in terms of earning vs page views.

If anyone could give me some pointers or point me in the right direction, it's be greatly appreciated!

I'm new to Adsense but I'm pretty sure $0.5 RPM is pretty bad. You will need someone with more experience than me to advice you though.

Found this post thought it might help you out.

"Interest based ads typically (for me anyways) result in about 1/10th of contextual ads and (for me) result in double the CPC's. The CTR might not be as high however the double CPC rate makes up for it. One of the MAJOR reasons why you should enable interest based ads is if Google doesn't have any good contextual ads relevant to your pages content, instead of showing "defaults" or low paying cpc ads, they can serve interest based ads to the visitor.

I personally don't understand why everyone is against interest based ads. I've been using them since inception and ad request rpm is pretty much spot on with contextual. Trying it out for a week or even a month is not a long enough period (IMO) to make a decision on whether or not its worth it or costing you money.

Also, never disable 3rd party ad networks. More ads competing for your page results in higher CPC bids. With 3rd party ads disabled there is less competition for ads on your site resulting in lower CPC averages from Google direct.

I've tried both disabling interest and 3rd party networks. Result was a 10% drop in typical overall revenue, and also $0.15+ drop in CPC. Once I flicked the switch back on for both settings revenue jumped back up.

I will agree that the banner at the end of the page is completely worthless. Ads "above the fold" will always yield a higher value and CTR. However, I would suggest mixing in a 468x60 or similar text ad with colors matching your sites theme in with your content above the fold."
