Only way to make serious cash in CPA - Spying/secret tools?

So i spoke with a friend today who seems to think the big players in CPA are only successful ones due to the tools/software they use to spy on competition and to 'fish' out the correct targets, to target their audience.

Thoughts?

Your friend is making a sweeping statement that probably isn't true. Sure it might be true for some of the big affiliates, but if all the big guys were just copying each other, then no one would be getting anywhere.

The guys quietly banking millions are 2 steps ahead of the guys using spy tools. They find something profitable and scale it as fast as they can. By the time you see their shit on the spy tools, you can be sure that they've already gotten a huge piece of the pie.

I use spy tools to see what other people are doing and whenever I see an interesting banner/landing page I'll jack it and benchmark it against my own creatives. If it gives any decent results I'll either try and expand on it or put it away for later use.

Although spy tools like BoxofAds and so forth can help with getting ideas on certain campaigns, I have found they DO NOT work regarding getting accurate targets that have been optimized properly for a particular campaign.
You will be able to view a number of targets that will give you "an idea" of other demographics to target, but the targets you receive are not the "high value, optimized" targets you would think you receive from these spy tools.

Most of them, I have found personally, are junk with 1-4 targets doing most of the converting........so essentially you are grabbing someone elses targets and testing them out yourself, so your better off just picking your own targets and testing them from the start.

These tools are great though to see which offers you may want to run. If you see an affiliate running an offer for an extensive period of time, then you may want to try it out or put it in your rotator.

If all the "big players" are using spying tools... who are they spying on?

Spying tools are great, they really help you see how a traffic source is being use by affiliates, but they are not typically the factor I see that make the money big time affiliates. Hundreds of people use spying tools, not all of them are big affiliates.

But spying tools are very useful!

I'd say the exact opposite to be honest. The more people rely on spy tools, the less creative and original they are. If you really want to make money you need to be creative and come up with your own ideas and not just rely on stealing others IMO.
