Would love ADWORD tips/advice from experts?

I have been doing marketing through social media for business sales because when I started out I found success.
However, with adwords i seem to be doing something wrong because ads are not actually converting that much or at all to make any profit. Price range of items for sale avg $30.

For example this weekend, I set up an ad targeting a optimized product landing page.
Spent in total $83.21 with avg. cpc $0.54 and got 154 clicks without any conversion.

Keywords I chose were exact match and broad modifier along with couple negative keywords...example:
((these are not keywords i used only examples))
[dog food]
+dog +food

Side Note:

- Product is good
- Landing page is optimized for mobile
- Price is competitive

If you are getting clicks and no conversion then the landing page is the problem. If you are not getting clicks then the ad is the problem. You need to find the better landing page that would match the ad you are promoting. If you're landing page is about dog food and people except to go and see dog food in the landing page, but if they see something other than dog food, they are not compelled to take the desired action. Suggestion, build at least 5 different landing pages to find out the winner.

You didn't say what your profit margin is, but at $0.54 per click you would need a conversion rate of over 3% to make a decent profit from a $30 sale. If you are sending traffic to your own landing page then the CTR would have to be much higher.

Try the same ad on Bing Ads for comparison...

Thanks for the Bing advice...I was actually in process of setting up Bing ads...

You are almost correct about the 3% conversion rate. With my profit margin and at this CPC cost and 3% conversion, I would not be losing any money through adwords.
However, to make any good profit from current adwords CPC i require a conversion rate of about 5%.

Note: With current landing page I had achieved 1% conversion through other traffic sources...

One thing I am sure is that to get a 5% conversion rate I need to be making some big changes. I will be making some changes to landing page and update keywords. And would update if I make any progress.

The thing to keep in mind when it comes to being successful with Affiliate Marketing and PPC is that you need to do lots of testing (There is no such thing as doing to much testing.).

It could be many different reasons why you are not receiving any conversions. With PPC advertising you need to make sure that you are organizing your campaigns properly. Organization is key! Break up each ad group to make sure that you are maximizing the reach of your target audience (This includes doing thorough keyword research and using the right match types.). Also be sure that your advertisement is using keywords and a call to action clearly stating what it is users will be seeing when they click your landing page. Your landing page could also be another reason why conversions are not happening. Be sure it is responsive, organized, not cluttered or confusing and complements your call to action from your advertisement you set up. You are clearly doing a good job in getting users to click on your ad, now you need to convert. Swith things up and keep it simple and clear. You don't want users wasting your ad dollars and hurting your ROI. Your advertisement is your pre-sell page and your landing page closes the deal.

My personal opinion with out knowing all of the details of your situation is that it is most likely your landing pages or an unclear advertisement only drawing attention and not being what the user is really searching for. Try testing out a couple different ads and landing pages. I hope this helps!

I did find an error on landing page...do not know if it caused that much impact...

On my ad I had this in second line -- "FREE Shipping"

However on landing page, I am actually not offering free shipping.

This might actually be the problem!

But how do I go about increasing conversion rate to ~3%... That is the tough part...I am working on rearranging text. Adding bigger picture...Plus of course will be offering free shipping...I guess will add some money back guarantee and satisfaction banners...

    What about the phrase match?

Be careful about short tailed BMM. I would probably not use "+dog +food" with BMM.

I think your landing page may not as good at converting as you think. Or your keywords are too generic. A small text ad will not be the main converting factor. It's the carrot to get people to your site, pre-sell. The LP is there to close the sale.

I know you're into adwords at the moment, but you'll probably pay less on Facebook ads and get more clicks. You get a to use images too in your ad copy and can use newsfeed or sidepage ads and that'll probably be a higher converting source of traffic for you IMO

This could still be a good campaign. The real key is examining the cost PER KEYWORD. Not on a macro level. You could have 50 keywords you're bidding on in this in which case each one has spent, $83.21/50=$1.66.

Spending $1.66 on a keyword is not enough data to make any decisions yet.

Figure out your max spend per keyword and stick to that instead.
