It becomes very difficult to sell people on your mailing list if they opt in to get something for free we call them freebies.
Looking at it with a broader perspective, the same people are on hundreds of mailing lists. They belong to other people lists making it difficult for them to know your identity.
In this perspective, are you on another person's mailing list?
You might be on people's lists but do you know the person mailing you? Are you aware of how you got into their list? It was your option at some point although you don't know who they are.
This happens to all of us but on the other hand, there are mailing lists that you are on and you are aware of who they are, how you got onto their lists, what you received in return and you go ahead to open and read their emails.
I have built email lists for nearly a decade and if I were to give a brief history of its evolution and how you get started then, I would tell you that you are slap banged in the middle of the perfect time to get started.
