You need it in order to know which traffic source is responsible for the sales or leads. So if you are bidding on 1000 keywords, you want to know which ones from that list are profitable and which ones drain your budget.

As an example, if you use Google Adwords PPC as your main traffic source ... there is a "ready-to-go" conversion pixel you can download directly in your account panel and then install on your thank-you page so you know which of their keywords you bid on and brings in traffic is responsible for how many conversions.

All PPC networks have such a pixel already built into their platforms but others you may need a custom tracking solution like tracking202 or Google Analytics, etc.

But with a tracking pixel you can therefore make sound decisions based on their performance and tweak for maximum ROI and profit such as pause keywords, lower the bid, increase the bid, drill down for more keyword combinations, expand on match types, etc.

But having tracking installed is a must in every campaign, regardless of the traffic source!

you don't have to use your pixel though, but it's the best way of tracking where your conversions are coming from, Nick has really good answer though!

Which tracking software are you using?
    <note a pixel is 100% optional>

It's used to automatically pass on to your tracker when you get a conversion so you do not need to manually update the subid's to show conversions

Normally you would just general the pixel in your tracking software and save it on your affiliate network account (or speak to your am about it)

I am using Prosper, well not using it yet. I have it installed on my hosting. I have not added a campaign to it yet. Just found a good video by Luke from Peerfly about using Prosper with 7Search.

I have read that the tracking pixel is optional. I gather it is a less detailed form of tracking. I don't really understand the concept. I am confusing it with a pixel on my screen or something.

I have searched high and low and have yet to come up with an explanation that I understand. A pixel can be any size, even rectangular I believe? I can create one pixel in windows paint program.

What would make the tracking pixel any different then any other pixel? Couldn't someone just create any pixel? And why is a pixel used instead of some code?

It's called a "pixel" because the script is generally fired from an image(with dimensions 1x1) in html. No matter though, just think of it as a script that gets fired when someone completes an offer.

    The process looks like this:

    - Someone clicks on your tracking link.
    - They complete the affiliate offer.
    - Your affiliate network fires your tracking pixel which records the lead on prosper.

the pixel is installed on the "thank you" page (which fires after the sale occurs).
but not always, you can also request to install the pixel say after registration page, so if you want to track a lead for example.
