What are the pros and cons of a CPA network?

I see that there's a lot of hype people joining CPA networks to get offers but why don't they just go directly to the merchants and join the affiliate programs?

What are the pros and cons of joining a CPA network instead of direct affiliate programs?

Direct affiliate programs usually pays more as they cut the middleman. The big problem is that sometimes, you may not get paid at all if the merchant is unsavory.

Do not get between a wombat and a chocolate biscuit; you will regret it dearly!

I've personally never noticed that myself...

I guess everyone has their own definition when it comes to 'hype'

You get help from an affiliate manager...

Who can literally be the eyes and ears to your profitable campaigns.

Most of the advertisers wont approve publishers who come direct without any traffic history. Once you start running traffic to the campaign and end up getting paid...then you can maybe approach the advertiser directly with your traffic stats.

The reason is that the advertisers who can put together effective direct response campaigns for CPA are the same guys who have to change their business name every few months due to consumer complaints. Such people have no incentive to pay you for traffic any more than they have an incentive to not bill/spam their customers in unfair ways. CPA affiliates are more like an exploitable / expendable resource to the advertiser than a business partner, so if it helps their bottom line they will simply ignore your invoices and think nothing of it. The only exception is if you have leverage in the form of being able to badmouth the advertiser to people they care about (ie. their actual business partners).

But a CPA network relies on its long-term brand reputation and thus has an incentive to not rip you off, even if you are a small fish. If all you want to do is run traffic and get paid, having a CPA network between you and the advertiser (ensuring you get paid) is well worth the percentage of commission you give them. Also, it is rare for you to cold-approach an advertiser and negotiate a bigger commission directly from them than you would get from a network. CPA networks have leverage and relationships, thus they negotiate higher payouts than most individuals can.
