Do sexy ads work?

Just curious if anyone has tried them. I'm thinking of having a model advertise my site. its a pics sharing site and getting her to wear a customized outfit with my logo.

    Hi:

    I'm sure that you have heard the expression "Sex Sells"

    That's been around for well over 100 years at least. So you can get attention with sexy ads, but your ad copy and product have to deliver the rest and "bring home the bacon."

    Just a word of caution: Don't generalize about anything in marketing.

    Sure "Sexy ads" can work in many marketplaces and with different products ... but to generalize and say they always work or that they are appropriate and effective in all circumstances would be a mistake.

    Here's just one example: using "sexy ads" to sell children's apparel probably won't work. There are lots of other examples.

    Marketing is all about understanding the specific marketplace, the "wants" of the audience, the product being sold, the timing, and other considerations.

    Test your ad on a small trial basis and see what kind of response you get before you spend a lot of money on any "sexy ad" campaign.

      totally agree Steve! You must always consider your audience. Ours is mostly gaming sites. For some types of games, these can work. For children's gaming sites, obviously not!

    As Steve said, you have to know your market, though.

    Like Steve mentioned it depends on your Website/Market. A Dating Advice Business for example would fit well whereas A Financial Newsletter for instance wouldn't be a good match. Maybe it would work for a pic-sharing Website. Certainly something worth testing.

    Thanks a lot guys i think it would work like crazy for my site. but heres a follow up question. How would you incorporate my website logo onto a womans body creatively? all ideas appreciated. i mean a T shirt is one idea but whats something more creative? you guys are good at advertising.

      I you want to go all out have it painted on the model as in the T-Shirt you will get some views

    Context is important as others have mentioned - and consider your brand. If you're running a breastaraunt - yeah, obvious good decision. I'd only consider doing this if I did not intend to market to women. You're likely to get a mild positive reaction from men and a strong negative reaction from women. GoDaddy for example dropped this form of advertising for this reason.

    Fire up Google, switch to Images and search for "Golden Palace Casino" or "goldenpalace.com".

    Do the same search on eBay.

    You might wish to consider applying subliminal sexual appeal in your branding.

    Virgin being one current example, by design and actual name shows how this can be achieved without having to be literal (thought it originally was).

    American Apparel's controversial ad campaigns were very successful. I suggest reading Ryan Holiday's book "Trust Me I'm Lying".

    There is a well known saying for advertising and marketing - "sex sells"

    With that being said I highly recommend you understand your niche and target demographics to make sure these types of ads are the right direction.

    I have split tested ads with materialistic things in such as Lamborghinis, Mansions etc and it works however a lot of people will dislike it.

    It catches peoples attention and will definitely increase your clicks and opt ins.
