Ditch adsense or not?

Hi.. my main site is #1 ranked on over 40 keywords. Got about 13k visitors monthly from google searches alone. However adsense is really f#cking me lately.. making about 3$ a week compared to 35$ a week a year ago.. so its no longer profitable for me.

The website is about various high volume keywords but unfortunately they are all worthless (like for example: How to type the dollar sign ) so there arent any affiliate products even remotely related to my keywords.

The question is.. if i put my site on a popunder network, will google punish me for it and decrease my rankings?

You can optimize your google adsense income by trying different placements and also by blocking the low earning ads. Create channels and enable placements for all your ad units. From my years of experience as freelancer as well as webmaster I can confirm that no other CPM or popup or pop under network can match even portion of adsense revenue. Using pop under along with adsense is not safe. You can also try media.net if more than 50 % of your traffic is from USA, Australia and European countries

As mentioned earlier, you can either try and optimize your adsense ads and placement or attempt to sell your own ad space if you think their is a market for it. Making 12 bucks a month is pretty bad considering you were making over $100 previously.

If you site targets a specific market, you might be able to approach product vendors to see if they would be willing to pay between $25-$50 a month for a prime ad spot on your website. If they are already doing PPC the small amount of money for a permanent spot on your site would be a drop in the bucket to them...and if your traffic converts odds are they will stay for months or years to come.

From my experience, if you're having bad RPM with Google, you're probably not going to get much better anywhere else...

Well pop under seems to pay 3-4$ per 1K visitors and they are all guaranteed because people dont have to click anything cuz the popunder pops on its own when they enter my website.
13K roughly visitors should bring me gross 50$ a month. Adsense brings me like 12-13$ a month at this moment. I am using an adsense optimized wp theme by the way.

If i decide to switch i will ofcourse remove the adsense from the page because i dont want my adsense account banned. But whats the ranking effect on my website if i place popunder on it? Will google see it as a spammy site and degrade it?

Just play around with different themes. Other than just think outside the box what your target audience might be interested. It doesn't really need to relate to the site content.

As others have mentioned above, you need to tweak your ad placements and sizes to get better click through rates or else you'll be leaving lots of money on the table.

    Some ideas to test...

    - Swap ad location / layout.
    - Test new ad network
    - Test CPA offer if applicable.
    - Build a list on your blog, and re-funnel traffic back to it.
    - Sell your own product even if simple.
    - Test Amazon Associates. Make product review posts for your niche.

    These are all worth testing.

Have you tried placing ads for CPA offers on your site? Often I find after some testing this is more profitable than adsense
