What are the viagra guys up to now?

Please excuse the un-intentional pun.. *ahem*

From time to time I check in on the porn and pharmaceuticals industry to see how they are optimising their sites. During these little expeditions I learn a lot of neat tricks (to do with search engine optimisation!).

Today I searched for "Buy Viagra" in google.co.uk and got this serp - buy viagra - Google Search

(It should give you the same serp but might not be there due to google displaying from different data centre)

I noticed that on the first page there is a tolkein (guy who wrote lord of the rings) fan forum. It just has a post in there to buy viagra and they got it onto page #1. I thought this was quite impressive and will be looking into it. I thought i would share it incase any other seo junkies wanted to look.

If you look at any niche with cutthroat search competition you'll learn a lot.

yes. I was surprised they managed to hijack someones site and get it to first page for such a competed term.

sometimes there is hijacking involved, but most of the time not actually - they just create a free profile usually at a forum or 2.0 site or so and then BlueFart backlink (XR) up that profile so it get major link juice and then later banned when they rinse and repeat.

1/2 the time the profile is cloaked meaning you will be redirected from there to their money site (but search engines wont) when you click on it

the other 1/2 of the time its just the link to click through.

The same strategy works to get listed in google news on sites that are 2.0 and google news 'approved' .

what you can take and learn from this as a whitehat webmaster is that you can use high PR forum profile pages as great sources for link building.
