So I built a site in mid-June and submitted it to about 10 social bookmarking sites. A few days later, I ranked #6 for my keyword (not overly competitive). Let's say this site was about Widgets. I have another site about Widgets, a PR5 to be exact. So after about a few weeks sitting at #6 and not moving, I added a backlink from my PR5 website. Within a day, my newer site disappeared off Google's SERPS. It was still indexed however. A few days later, my site came back but at the 100th position. It stayed like that for the past 5 or so days. My question is, when is the best time to introduce high PR backlinks? Is it a matter of website age? other existing backlinks? I was thinking that next time I will social bookmark a site, use web 2.0 properties to build 10 or so backlinks, try to get a few related low pr sites to link to me and then introduce the higher PR backlinks. That will seem more natural. What are your thoughts on this? PS: I am not talking about getting a backlink from pages with no inner pr value (although this has proven to be quite successful). |

I really don't think it matters when you introduce high PR backlinks. Let's say you came up with a really unique idea for a website, and it went viral a matter of days after launching. You'd end up with a ton of backlinks from high PR websites as a result, and Google wouldn't punish this. What you experienced is just part of the usual Google dance. It will likely be months before it settles into the rankings.

Yes, maybe. Or are both sites hosted on the same server and share the same IP? If so, that MAY be the problem. I'd just keep on steadily building links to it. It'll rise again at some point. |

There is no perfect time to add High PR backlinks. It sounds to me like your site is doing the google dance. So keep building backlinks both related and high pr etc and then it will jump back up to the top eventually. You have to show google that people love the site and are linking to it :P Tom Brite |

I will keep trying adding backlinks and we will see what happens. What is interesting is that the side was stable at its position until I added the backlink, hence it is a direct effect. Any other opinions/experiences?

When I have first made lenses/blogs they bounce around often in the rankings for me especially when they are in there infancy. But if you keep adding backlinks google will slowly increase the rankings as you pass your competitors.

The more likely explanation is that your new site was given a temporary boost due to the "query deserves freshness" factor, and then once that wore off, was dropped back to its "natural" position. | |

Google doesn't penalize because links are from the same server. What if everyone uses Godaddy hosting or HostGator? remark is unfounded I do agree with your freshness factor. Google gives a fresh push, then the site normally falls behind. Concerning the social bookmarking...if the sites are nofollow then don't expect anything from those links. So basically, you have 1 backlink from a decent PR site. IF your social bookmarking sites were dofollow links...then 2nd question would be...did you build more links with those accounts? 2 things can happen doing this 1. Your links fall on page 2 of the social bookmark account. This is not good. 2nd pages doesn't carry as much weight as page 1 2. You add 9 links ...then the juice is divided by 10 links. Now you're only getting 1/10 or 10% of the juice you were getting before Quote:

It is not the matter with the PR, It is known as Google dance ![]() I have got the same issues, then I just keep on adding backlinks to recover from it. So, it is better to add links via Forums posts, Blog comments, social bookmarks and Blogging. That will help you to recover. Have you checked "Allinanchor:Keyword", Are you top? |

Does the PR5 site have the same IP or whois info as the new site? (In other words, can you tell they are both yours?) Otherwise I agree on the Google dance. Add backlinks and make it look natural. Your rankings should stabilize over time (3-6 months is my experience.) |

Hi artlan, Chris got it right, you have described the exact fluctuation that is typically a result of the QDF. Your page got a temporary boost and then it sunk to its true ranking. Go to work promoting traffic and overtime you will see its ranking rise again. |
