Why are Google backlinks so much lower then Yahoo?

When I run backlinks programs like Backlink Checker the difference between Google and Yahoo are enormous! Why does Google report such a small number for backlinks and Yahoo so MANY backlinks?

Yahoo 17,143
AltaVista 6,250

Hi nofearman,

It's a privacy issue, Google will show you the true number when you register and verify your ownership of the website in Google Webmaster Tools.

I always thought it was because of Google is harder to index

Is there any documentation on this? I can't see how this can be. I can pull up my competitor's links (he has about 300).

Here's what Google has posted on the subject:
"You can add up to 500 sites, including news and mobile sites, to your account. In addition, we'll ask you to verify your site. This is because we need to know you own a site before we'll show you certain information about it or enable you to use our tools."

Do you have a Webmaster Tools account? Just create an account at Webmaster Tools, verify your site and you will see all those backlinks for yourself.

Different policies - google chose to display a sample of backlinks, whereas the limit yahoo went for is a thousand.

This is to keep there ranking algorithm a secret.

If you are able to view the backlinks of any site you can go through the backlinks and also the number of backlinks and it will give you an insight into how google ranks websites, thats too much statistical data for the big "G" to hand over as there are many technical boffins who would devour the info and have an edge over eveyone or more likely sell the info to others.

Its just a measure to keep the workings of google a secret.

I never knew about this before

. Really i was thinking that G only shows important backlinks and if you need to check the rest of them then you need to use some other tools.

i guess its just the policy of google not to show you all the links. Hey pal, why worry about that? just continue getting the links. You will know the impact of the links you are getitng from the way your site moves in the search engine. But if you must and want to track the backlinks, you can make use of yahoo site explorer or backlinkwatch.com. This is what i often use.

Yes, have a webmaster account, but don't think that is what I am looking for. I am comparing competitor links via bcklink tools. So, I guess the links of competitors is not accurate

By policy Google will not show you all the backlinks a site has, but you can get the bulk of them using:

Matt Cutts said in his Google blog that they don't show all the backlinks because then people would find sites to copy and try to get all the same backlinks that that site has if they knew what they were.
