Can one have a site about one topic and then have the subDomain of a completely different subject - and then seo and backlink the subdomain to the top of the serps of a particular niche? Never done it before - but I'm betting I can. What do you guys think?

creating a subdomain is like creating a new website if you put it in a subfolder then it would carry weight |

This not a tough job I think. If you are a professional SEO, it is just like pour water in a glass and drink it. If any one don’t have any idea on this just follow blooger.com, wordpress.com ’s idea which is already told by Tyrus Antas. Don’t beat on such thing which so simple. Nailzer

One big pro from an SEO perspective, is you can name your sub domain with a highly contested key word phrase. For example, you'd never be able to buy mortgage.com, but nobody can stop you setting up mortgage.yourdomain.com.
