Google's magical position 350

I am starting to believe that position 350 in Google's index has some kind of wormhole attached to it... here is why.

I have been promoting a number of pages on various sites of mine recently by various backlinking techniques using my target keyword phrase as anchor text. Pretty standard stuff so far. Anyway, each page that I have been promoting were originally so deep inside Googles index that nobody would ever find them.

On each occassion however after some backlinking from some trusted places, my page will suddenly get propelled up to around position 350 in Google's index. Then the wormhole seems to do it's magic as within a week my page will get sucked in and find itself in Google's top 10. The usual Google dance will usually ensue jumping up and down the index but the point is, position 350 is usually a good indicator to me that my page is about enter the top 10. Has anyone else noticed this?

what do you use to determine that position (just curious)

previously there was talk of the 400 barrier....

i remember doing some checking on my first site (can't even remember with what)

and i got a message - not in the top 400

does that ring a bell ?

but it does make sense - beyond a certain number, a page is not considered to be a "major player" - once it "gets in", it is re-evaluated sooner.

that's how may small brain sees it....

and i could be wrong....

i don't speak "google" perfectly yet.....

I don't use any tools anymore to find web position out of paranoia but thats another story..

I set google preferences to 100 positions and the use CTRL F in firefox to search for my domain. I can then see roughly the position my domain ends up in.

You can get the exact position by hovering mouse over the 'cached' link and see the parameter &cd=10, this number is the exact position of your listing.

Never realized that. I've been doing the same as Steve and just count or estimate the position. Great tip.
