For new sites...it takes 2-3 months of link building for them to appear on good SERP...that still depend on your technique though. Starts first on analyzing your keywords..here's a great tool to guid you on that matter:

Hi,

If it is existing site you're talking about, so make sure you do onpage SEO for all pages in your site.

you need to add your targeted keyword in meta page title, description, H1-H6 tags, alt image tag, body content of your pages.

once this is done, you concentrate building backlink via directory submission, article submission, social networking sites bookmarking and blog/forum commenting.

not forget to mentioned, keep adding fresh original content on regular basis.

this is what i'm practice. lot of work, but naturally your ranking will improve.

hope it will help

Better link building should be a great key of success for your other keywords. Create new content based on the targeted keywords, get it linked with popular article or buzz submission sites and also do a social networking throughout.

Have you got a blog? Google loves blogs and you can update regular posts with keyword in title tags and content and link back to your main page with anchor text from content! good strategy and do as everyone else says socialbookmarking individual posts.

I use wordpress self hosted and pretty easy to install on back of main site.
